Home to both the midnight sun (with constant daylight from April to July) and the northern lights, North Norway is a rugged land of steep mountains, deep fjords and scenic coastline, making it a great place for outdoor adventures like dog sledding, snowmobiling and wildlife safaris. It's also the ancient home of the Sami people, 3,000 of whom live (along with 100,000 reindeer) at Kautokeino, Norway's largest municipality at over 3,700 square miles.

You’ll find the arctic city of Vardø as far east as you can go in Norway. There’s limited access to professional guides in this area, so why not have your own personal guide directly on your smartphone? You’ll see the highlights of the city through the eyes of a local. Take all the time you need and stop along the way if feel like it. The tour starts from the port, where the Hurtigruten arrives every evening. We’ll go along the shores of Vardø, passing the statue of Willem Barentz, before arriving at the wharves and warehouse of Brodtkorp. The tour also takes you to the dark side of local history by telling the story of the burning of witches at Steglnes. Finally we’ll pass the marvelous Vardøhus Fortress, before arriving back at the port. The tour automatically plays audio at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS service and the VoiceMap mobile app. Start the tour, put your phone in your pocket, and let my voice guide you through the highlights of Vardo.

The reindeer and the Sami have been living and working on this land for centuries and they have only recently invited guests to be part of their daily life. You will visit their camp and have a chance to feed the herd of around 300 wild reindeer who will swarm all around and some will even eat from your hands. You will then be invited for hot drinks around the fire inside a warm candlelit gamme (Traditional Sami Hut) where lunch, bidos, cooked over the open fire will be served (a traditional Sami stew which is often served at Sami weddings and other special occasions). After lunch you will be invited into a lavvu (Sami tent) and gather around the fire to listen to stories about Sami culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will also perform a joik (traditional Sami song) for the guests.
Inclusions: Pickup and drop-off at designated meeting points, Transportation to camp, Guide, Snacks, Coffee and/or Tea, Lunch, Use of warm overalls

I didn’t expect it to be so beautiful! It really made my day! When we got to the reindeers’ farm, two beautiful Sami ladies dressed in their traditional clothes warmly welcomed us. We got invited into a Sami tent to warm up by the fire. Both ladies sang to us unique Sami songs. We were served hot drinks, traditional food and we enjoyed a long sleighing trip. We fed the reindeers which was-for me-the best part. It was one of the most beautiful days in my life! I just wanted to go every day :)

We had an amazing evening! Reindeer sled riding, overnight in a Sami tent, traditional Sami dinner and the Sami guide who spoke on their culture and ways of life (she is a reindeer herder!), and we saw the northern lights! This was a cool experience, but I am not sure I'd sleep over again. At age 60 sleeping in Lavvu on reindeer skin and stocking a fire oven once an hr was a stretch. That being said, I am very glad I did it. However you can come out and do everything else and then return back to town rather than stay in the tent.
