This private tour takes us north along the amazing landscapes of the west coast of Portugal until we arrive at Óbidos. Walking tour with your guide and free time in the village.  Free Cherry Liqueur tasting. "Off the beaten path": we will stop at the odd rock formations at Cabo Carvoeiro, Peniche. Another unique place is the village of Baleal, a peninsula that stretches into the Atlantic. We will stop there for you to explore the place. A fusion of land and ocean. Nature in pure state. Mafra National Palace is one of the largest buildings in Europe. Visit to the church. The words "massive," "monumental," "gigantic," "colossal," and "vast" fail to describe the scale of Mafra's Baroque royal palace. Short lunch break for you to taste  the old traditional convent sweets.

Inclusions: Official Driver/guide and visits to the monuments, Toll fees, Vehicle with air conditioning and free wi-fi on board., Hotel/port pick-up and drop-off, 1 bottle of water per person, refreshing wipes and pocket tissues, 1 Cherry Liqueur per person, Offer of a COVID-19 kit (masks and disinfection gel).

Exclusions: Entrance-fees to monuments, Food and drinks, unless specified

While the title seems to say it all, to put it into context, we have been traveling for 30 years and always arrange for our own guides even if we are on a cruise. Not only did Paulo have a tremendous depth of knowledge about both the past and present of Portugal, he had the ability to tell the story in a concise and relevant manner that was engrossing. There were a number times during our day with Paulo when we would say to ourselves, "This is the best guide that we have ever had"! And indeed he was.

In 1807 Napoleon sent his armies to invade Portugal as punishment for the country not having joined his Continental Blockade. With the English help, a joint force of British and Portuguese commanded by the future Duke of Wellington was created to tackle the situation. Anticipating the third and last invasion the duke built two impregnable defensive lines north of Lisbon, fortifying all the surrounding hills. In this tour we will visit three of the main forts of the Torres Vedras Defensive Lines which connect the Tagus to the Atlantic: the Alhandra Memorial Fort, the Zambujal Fort in Mafra and the Torres Vedras Castle Fort. In Mafra we'll visit the magnificent baroque complex Palace/Convent/Basilica, built with the large amounts of gold brought from Brazil. On this trip we will talk about the history of this period and the importance of the influence of French revolutionary ideas on the future of Portugal. A highlight of the tour is the beautiful scenery of the places we will visit.

Henrique was our guide for a delightful day designed around our specific interests and temporarily limited mobility. We visited Estoril ( where we learned "Casablanca" was filmed), Cascais, a mountain viewpoint in the Serra da Sintra National Park with spectacular views of the coastline, Sintra itself but briefly because of the crowds, and on the way home, the Queluz Palace. Our day was all the more interesting because with his extensive knowledge of Portuguese history Henrique was able to put everything we saw into a more comprehensive context. Regrettably we don't know Portuguese so his facility with foreign languages was a vital contributor to our enjoyment. The day was also a wonderful eating experience because of Henrique's familiarity with the region, including a morning espresso and traditional pastry at Cascais and delicious lunch at at a restaurant where we are pretty sure the other guests were entirely Portuguese. Without hesitation we thoroughly recommend taking tours with Henrique!

After some confusion between the Booking company and Lanebus, which made the driver arrive a bit later, I was very impressed form the service is given by Lanebus, a very professional driver very helpful and courteous, lovely smooth ride with a great quality vehicle. On the day of the return trip, I have received all the information indicating where the driver was and how long would be to reach me, what a WONDERFUL service. I have no issues with booking or recommend Lanebus.

Queluz Palace and its historic gardens are one of the most extraordinary examples of the harmonious connection between landscape and palace architecture in Portugal. They illustrate the evolution of the Court's taste, a period marked by Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism. Mafra - famous for its palace-convent, built by D.
