This is the worst experience that I have encountered through a booking.com reservation. On arrival at 1745, we contacted the owner by telephone as we knew that we were 15 minutes early. The recipient spoke only French but we explained that we had arrived at the hotel; that it was locked, in darkness, nobody was present either staff or guests and asked what we should do. In combination with another person on the phone who spoke limited English, they asked whether a blue car was at the hotel and explained that a key was placed in a location that we could find. We should gain access and await the owner who would arrive within 30 minutes. They expressed significant surprise that there was nobody at the hotel expecting a blue car to be present. The “hotel” was in darkness, locked, nobody was present - neither staff or guests. We gained access using the key, all of the bedrooms were open and unoccupied, there was some damp bedding on the bed in our room together with several damp sheets and towels on a washing line in the upstairs hall. There were no coffee, tea or hot drinks facilities available. The toilet in the room was disgustingly filthy, water was coffee-brown in colour, there were no towels in the room and there was no hot water and the hotel was cold and clearly not prepared for residents. In summary the room was extremely poor, there were no staff and no facilities available. We waited for 90 minutes and the owner did not attend the property or any staff despite promising that they would attend within 30 minutes. We tried to contact the owner again by telephone and nobody answered. With no alternative available, we left the property and booked another hotel. No contact or apology was made by the owner via email or telephone for the lack of check-in facility or staff available and the hotel being closed. We are currently in dispute over a full refund of the charges.

I stayed here for 2 nights in August as I was attending a wedding nearby. I arrived with my mother who is quite disabled at around midday in a taxi. the office was closed for lunch and did not open till 14:30. We were really thirsty, the bar was also closed. Some other guests gave us some juice, which was very kind of them. There is no shop in this 'village'. it took us ages to get our keys at 14;30 as there was only one member of staff. She was clearly a student and this was her holiday job. There was no senior staff. After the first night, a terrible odour started filling the chalet. There was clearly a problem with the drain under the toilet. Another student/staff member gave us a spray but this was ineffective. There was no handyman and no manager to deal with the problem, only the students who were perfectly friendly but seemed to be completely on their own. There was no free chalet for us to move to so we just had to put up with it. We were glad to leave.

Firstly the good points - very friendly host who has a lovely ball obsessed collie. The bed was comfortable and large. It was clean. However, we were very disappointed by our room - which was ground floor but with no external windows, a shower within the room and a WC outside the room in a corridor (that was promised only we would access, but anyone could if they choose to!). It smelt damp all the time which was unpleasant and claustrophobic. Cheap furnishings and bedding, and budget supermarket toiletries. The breakfasts, which had good reviews on Trip Advisor, were very basic (not worth a good review) apart from a choice of home made jams. Also we were expecting the property to be near the coast from images online, so were very disappointed to find it is on a very busy roadside and not close to the coast at all! Next time we will verify the exact location on a map and not from images!

Nicole is a clever woman who has renovated and decorated three guest cottages so that they are spacious, light and airy. More than that she has used an artistic flair to make them modern and different to most. She has added thoughtful touches throughout, and our bathroom had a wonderful large walk in shower. There is a separate cottage used for breakfast, and it had a well equipped kitchen guests could use. Breakfast was lovely with fresh fruit salad, and all the usual croissants, baguettes, jams etc. When we left she presented us with a small package of homemade biscuits. It was very hot when we visited but the interior of the stone cottage was cool, and we slept well. The gateway to the property is narrow and a little tricky. If coming from the south the property is on the left right on the corner, before you get to the Chateau. The road is moderately busy, but the rooms are set well back behind locked gates, so not too noisy.

The Manoir de la Groye is typical of French Renaissance architecture, with a little Tuscan touch. A listed building, it is settled in gorgeous gardens open to visits. In the heart of the Anjou region, famous for its history and vineyards, it is built on the slope facing the Loire valley, an area listed as a World Heritage Site. As architect and landscape architect, we have carefully renovated the interiors and the expansive gardens to create a preserved romantic haven, striking a balance between antique and contemporary to offer our guests optimal comfort. The large pool, settled in a southern-style garden, is an invitation to swim. The large red living room and its library are worth a stop too. Freely-accessible bicycles give you the opportunity to discover the Loire landscapes. 12 acres of garden are there for you to either go for a walk or rest. The main square of the village, its bakery and its two restaurants, are a short walk away.
My partner and I stayed at the Manoir for almost a week while visiting family in the area and suited our needs perfectly. The house is set among a gorgeous garden and landscape (the whole property is maybe three or four acres!) and our hosts had obviously done an incredible job restoring and maintaining the it all. You can tell that they are incredibly passionate about horticulture (and have even labeled many of the plants on-site!), and dedicated to maintaining the authenticity and historic qualities of their home (like the exposed wood rafters, the original flooring and windows, and the slate stone walls and walkways), but have also elegantly integrated the modern amenities we all appreciate having (like beautiful new showers with excellent water pressure, full kitchens and plenty of radiators and outlets). The hosts are incredibly generous and available on-site to answer our many questions about the house and the region. There is a traditional french boulangerie just up the street with fresh bread and pastries, or you can elect to have breakfast provided by the hosts. There is a medium sized supermarket and pharmacy 5-10 minutes drive in Juigne, a farmers market once a week in Brissac 20 minutes away, and a very large supermarket one about 20 minutes away, and then of course the city of Angers is only about half an hours drive from the Manoir. The house is a perfect base to drive to the various chateaus in the region (dozens of which are within an hours drive from Saint Saturnin) and the area around the Manoir is quite flat with small and quite roads through farms and vineyards and so is perfect for biking around touring the many small towns in the area. And after a day of exploring, the Manoir is a perfect place to come home to and relax - there is a patio to enjoy the sunshine right outside the apartment we stayed in, plenty of chairs scattered through the garden and arboretum to enjoy a good book or have a picnic, and there is even a swimming pool!
