The charming Vietnamese capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture, while making room for modern developments alongside. Hanoi may have shrugged off several former names, including Thang Long, or "ascending dragon," but it hasn't forgotten its past, as sites such as Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison attest. Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city, which is easily explored by taxi.

We loved our cooking class! My husband, myself and our 13 year old did this. It started with a very interesting and informative trip to the local market (via cyclos - which you must try!) and then we learnt about the various ingredients, shopping at the wholesale and retail markets. The class by the chef was awesome. So informative and interesting (and very funny). Would recommend to anyone.

Hanoi Cooking Centre established in 2009, remains Hanoi's only purpose built cooking school and culinary centre. A variety of cooking classes and street food tours are available twice daily. All classes begin with welcome tea, while a chef gives a brief introduction to the local Chau Long market and Vietnamese market culture generally. After a 3 minute walk guests arrive at the market and are immediately submerged into the hustle, bustle and wonder of one of the last remaining wet markets in Hanoi. Our chef will explain the produce and offer various samples along the way. After returning to the centre you will then participate in a 'hands-on' cooking class and the morning / afternoon finishes in our air-conditioned restaurant where you and your class mates can enjoy the dishes you have prepared along with free flow drinks. All guests receive a complimentary and much sort after Hanoi Cooking Centre apron and recipe cards. Class + lunch = approximately 3.5hrs For guests preferring a more adventurous time, our 5 hour street food tour also includes the market tour and then takes guests to 5 of the best known (amongst the locals and our HCC staff) street food venues across Hanoi. The number 1 rule for this tour = come hungry! For guests with limited time try our Market Tour & Lunch or Dinner package for a truly authentic Hanoi culinary experience.
I took the Vietnamese Street Food class on September 20th. There were only two of us in the class and we received personal attention by the instructor who took us to the wet market and taught the class. We even witnessed a raid by the police in charge of food safety practices. Each dish that we learned about was exceptional from the Pho Ba to the barbecued pork all extremely worthwhile. I have made the deep-fried spring rolls twice and applied what I learned about Pho Ba to Pho Ga and my wife loved.

Best thing I did in Hanoi, enjoyed the pick up on the back of motorcycle, and enjoyed tasting the different tasty vietnamese dishes in the old quarter. Went back to revisit some of the places we went to before leaving Hanoi, and returning back from Halong Bay, food was so tasty and memorable didnt compare to the restaurants. Thoroughly recommend doing, do it the first night you arrive .
