Tbilisi (English: /təbɪˈliːsi, təˈbɪlɪsi/ tə-bih-LEE-see, tə-BIL-ih-see; Georgian: თბილისი [tʰbilisi] ( listen)), in some countries also still named by its pre-1936 international designation Tiflis (/ˈtɪflɪs/ TIF-liss), is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of approximately 1.5 million people. Founded in the 5th century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, since then Tbilisi served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Between 1801 and 1917, then part of the Russian Empire, Tbilisi was the seat of the Imperial Viceroy, governing both Southern and Northern Caucasus.

We bought tickets online for a ballet performance about a month in advance. We saw a ballet based on a popular children's cartoon that seems like a Georgian version of the Nutcracker. The young kids seemed to enjoy it and it was fun to see the little ballerinas twirling in the splendid rooms of the theater during intermission. Randomly, everyone joined in singing the Beatles' "All you Need is Love" at the end. The family of the great choreographer George Balanchine came from Georgia, so there is a strong ballet tradition. There was a real "wow" factor when the dancers performed part of the pas de deux from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, so it would have been nice to see a more serious work. We wish we had also been able to attend an opera in this magnificent building with its Moorish architectural influences. Two of the best seats in the house in a private box were the equivalent of about $50 USD. Great value for a memorable culture experience.

Thos quirky clock building is a Tbilisi icon and, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see the wooden angel pop out and ring the bell on the hour. Apparently there’s an extra special one at 7pm each night but we always missed it. If you get the chance, go to one of the marionette shows inside. They’re on every night at 8pm but you have to book in advance as it is VERY popular. We saw Stalingrad and it was excellent! Definitely not aimed at war buffs or history fans, as it was more of a whimsical collection of vignettes with not too much of a connected story. The puppets were gorgeous and skill of the puppeteers was outstanding. We loved the whole show, but could see others looking puzzled.

Today I watched the musical “Welcome to Georgia”. I can’t explain the happiness of the energy of people who were watching it with me. These people represent tourists from all over the world visiting and exploring Georgia like me! I learned so much from authentic Georgian dancing and singing, and I laughed so hard from the main characters personalities and the excellent sense of humor that goes all along the plot. I would totally come back to Georgia and watch this show again!
