"Tsugaru Kokeshi Doll Museum" displays approximately 4,000 traditional kokeshi, the tallest jumbo kokeshi in Japan, and a giant wood-based Dharma. You can see Kokeshi craftsmanship by Kokeshi craftsmen, and you can also experience Kokeshi painting. Kokeshi goods, kokeshi miscellaneous goods, as well as traditional kokeshi can be purchased as souvenirs. What is Kokeshi? In the latter half of the Edo period, people called kijishi, who made wood sawn bowls and trays, began to make kokeshi as souvenirs for children. Traditional kokeshi are classified into 11 types, all of which are located in the Tohoku region, and are manufactured using patterns and techniques that are appropriate for each region. Kokeshi continues to be made by inheriting the pattern from the teacher to the apprentice, and its creator is called Kokeshi Kojin. Kuroishi City, Aomori Prefecture is a production area of Tsugaru Kokeshi, one of 11 types of Kokeshi.
