We arrived at the Monastery site just after 10am and the carpark was nearly empty but by the time we joined the guided tour at 11am the group of visitors numbered between 15-20. Cost 2 Euro each. Whilst waiting for the tour to begin we were invited to view the church by ourselves and visit the pharmacy shop to make any purchases. The tour guide was very informative, mainly spoken in Italian but there were printed sheets in English and German. The information given by the guide gave meaning to what we were seeing and we would recommend viewing the Monastery with the guide. The history is fascinating e.g. it appears Dante Alighieri stayed here for a while when exiled from Florence as he mentions Fonte Avellana in Cantico del Paradiso; also the crypt which was more or less in its original form was of interest. Both romanesque and arabic arches were built in the Monastery; the eastern influence came from the monks who arrived via the Holy Land. During our visit our noses were assailed by very appetising cooking smells from the kitchens below, however, we decided not to luncheon here as we were heading towards Fabriano. Visitors can stay at the Foresteria next to the church, on request, and anyone who likes trekking can find several itineraries well mapped out. There is much to learn about the Monastery and the Camaldolesi order; worth reading up.

In a small 14-century chapel you can see incredibly beautiful frescoes. The colours are vivid even after so many centuries. The Salimbeni brothers who frescoed the walls were masters of the International Gothic style and their work reminded me of Giotto's masterpiece in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. The frescoes tell the life of John the Baptist. At the entrance, you can pick up a description of the frescoes (in English) so that you can understand what episode of his life is being told. This is an absolute must for art lovers.

The oratory of saint Joseph is one of the most beautiful and ancient monuments of Urbino, property of the st. Joseph Confraternity. It is composed by a church builted in the 17th century with a lot of frescoes, some paintings and a colossal statue of saint Joseph. There are also a sacristy with a beautiful wooden painted wardrobe, a little chapel called "dello sposalizio" and a unique room with a crib in full size made by the artist Federico Brandani in the 1550, the oldest crib in natural size in the world. In some showcases are exposed several silver objects from 18th Century, donated by cardinal Albani, and there is also a section of Confraternity History with ancient uniforms and objects.
