A diverse multicultural city of almost 1.3 million, Panama City offers a lot more than an up-close view of the Canal. Shantytowns slink up alongside shiny high-rise condos. The Old City is an atmospheric labyrinth of churches, plazas and palaces. Fifteen miles from downtown Panama City, Soberania National Park is an excellent destination for hiking and birding. For a fascinating look at the canal, take a taxi or local bus to Miraflores Locks Visitor Center and look down on the traffic below.

The Church of Saint of Saint Francis of Assisi is worth a visit. It is located right in front of Plaza Simon Bolivar. The main altar is spectacular. It features a beautiful mosaic portraying the Virgin Mary in the center, stepping on a serpent, surrounded by angels and accompanied by Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Francis Xavier; below, there are Jesuit saints and martyrs. There are many ornaments in sumptuous marbles, figures such as Nuestra Señora del Pilar, San Judas Tadeo, San José, and San Francisco de Asis. The air conditioned is wonderful, and it adds to your comfort while you enjoy a special moment of prayer and contemplation of the many details of this temple.

The remains of this church are nicely preserved including the famous unsupported arch. It's a nice place to view and reflect when it's quiet.
