Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago, was declared a city in the 1500s, and became an important point between the old and new worlds. The laid-back city owes much of its historical prominence to "white gold," Madeiran sugar. Today Funchal is known for its appealing temperatures, wine and crafts. Top spots to visit include the open Worker's Market, Blandy's Wine Lodge and the Sacred Art Museum. Friendly locals, walkable streets and cheap taxis make the city easy to get around.

Igreja do Socorro is a church with breathtaking architecture and a beautiful position on top of a hill overlooking the sea. Just a 5 minute walk from Funchal, it is quiet, peaceful and a very reflective space. Well worth a visit.

A visit to Portugal's magnificent cathedral, dating from the 1400s, is a must-see during a tour of Funchal.
This is a must visit place right in the centre of Funchal. Daily services are held here, so be careful not to disturb. Worthwhile visiting to see the decoration inside. There tends to be beggars at the door, so be prepared. Wonderful angel decorations outside the railings in December, worthwhile seeing those and the many Christmas decorations in streets around the cathedral.

This 18th-century church, a pilgrimage site, is located in the picturesque village of Monte.
Nice church on the top of Monte. At the bottom of the church there are sledges available. The views are beautiful once you climb the stairs up.
