Sao Francisco Church and Convent

One of the most spectacular churches in the world, this famous church is richly adorned inside with gold, silver and precious stones and has ceiling art that has been compared to that of the Sistine Chapel.

Reviewed By MelBr75 - Curitiba, Brazil

It’s a world heritage by UNESCO. It’s an important colonial period church. It’s interior is very beautiful and full of details. Exuberant inner decoration, mostly executed in the first half of the 18th century. All surfaces inside - walls, pillars, vaults and ceilings - are covered by golden sculpted gilt woodwork and paintings.

Basilica of Nossa Senhora do Pilar

This baroque style church is very lavish inside, reflecting a period in which religious orders competed with each other to build the richest church.

Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim

Reviewed By midwaytoheaven - Midway, United States

We lucked out to be able to visit here on Carnival while there was a church Mass being performed. This is the most famous church in Salvador and was built back in 1754. In English, it is know as "Church of Our Lord of Bonfim". It is well worth coming and seeing the inside and outside of this church. It is located an the top of Montserrat Hill. Many tours come here as well as port taxis. BOTTOM LINE: When you arrive you will see an amazing sight of tens of thousands of multi-colored "wish" ribbons tied to every part of the decorative iron fencing surrounding the Cathedral. You can purchase these ribbons from one of the street stand vendors. Legend has it that if you come here and either tie the ribbon around your wrist or onto the church fence, when it falls off your "wish" will come true. No sure if that works since we did not have that much time to verify it! A lovely church with an interior of many gold gilded accents, altar and amazing inside details. You'll love seeing this special Cathedral. MY RATING: 10/10

Igreja da Se

Reviewed By DelfinoEdward - Lucena, Brazil

This is a beautiful church in the historic center of São Luis. The altar is decorated in gold leaf, done in the baroque style. It is close to the Governor’s mansion (also known as Palácio dos Leões, which is also definitely worth a visit); you really don’t need more than 10 minutes to see the inside & take a few photos, so if you are anywhere nearby, it’s worth your time.
