Discover Restaurants offering the best Central European food in Goettingen, Lower Saxony, Germany. Best known to most Germans as the locale of Georg-August University, Gottingen has about 130,000 residents, about a quarter of whom are students. Gänseliesel (Goose Girl) is the city's most famous resident, a 1901 fountain built in front of the 14th century Rathaus (Town Hall), which today houses the city's tourist office. But even Goose Girl can't escape the college students, who by tradition upon receiving their PhDs must climb and kiss her, making her "the most kissed girl in the world."

Mutter Jütte is THE place for (1) real German fried potatoes (Bratkartoffeln) and (2) for a traditional German winter (Christmas) dinner: goose with red cabbage and all the other good stuff that comes with it. I am sure the other food is excellent as well - but this is what we normally come here for. And we have never been disappointed! It's a cozy, authentic, relaxed, down-to-earth restaurant near Göttingen - and certainly worth a visit!

We were here for brunch, partly on the recommendation of a local police officer and partly because the place looked promising and has a great location. Breakfast/brunch is generally something that Germany specialises in but not this time. Scrambled eggs hopelessly over-cooked and clearly prepared a long time before, with brown patches from the heated tray they had been kept in. Zero excuses for that. Some fatty salmon with industrial dill mustard sauce, plus what had to be supermarket herring salad, etc, etc. The bread was ice cold and crumbling, straight out of the freezer - a travesty in the land of great bread. We advised the waiter of this, he snottily and reluctantly took it away and brought it back hot out of the microwave: perfect definition of the German word "verarschen". When we came to pay, the waitress couldn't change a 100 euro note (the bill was something like 40 euros) and stood there staring stupidly at us as if to say, "well, go and change it somewhere so I don't have to." She then announced that she would have to go to the bank to get change before we could pay so it may take some time. We offered to leave without paying to speed the process up. Everything we encountered smacked of poor and lazy management. Even the toilets smelled at a time in the day when no more than a handful of people could have used them. On the evidence of this experience, I won't be rushing back to try lunch or dinner.

This restaurant is quite hard to find, tucked away on the corner of Brunneng. and MittelstraÃe in Weende, just north of the junction between the K4 (HennebergstraÃe) and Hannoverisch StraÃe. There is no parking on site, but the side roads nearby may have some free spaces. The food presentation in this restaurant is excellent. So many little touches which mark this out as something special, such as miniature strawberries in the side salad etc.The staff are friendly and attentive. It is possibly to have a great meal here, but choose with care to avoid pre-prepared dishes straight from the freezer.

Gaudi is located inside a Hof reached by 2 passages from off the main streets. We ate outside and there were two little two seater tables. Staff was attentive and polite. We ordered tapas. They were good, but not awesome. A little pricey. It was a nice evening regardless. They also have pasta and fish dishes.

This hotel is situated on the East side of Hannoverisch StraÃe in Weende. It is directly onto the main road, but parking is possible from Steinweg just to the South, round the back of the nearby Argentinian Steakhouse. There is a good choice of food in the restaurant which is well cooked. There is also a fairly comprehensive wine list too.The staff are particularly friendly and attentive. The restaurant is busy with locals, which is always a good sign.

A modern extension on the left side of the historic Deutsches Theatre includes the "DT Bistro" - an attractive and relaxed place to eat and drink. The food available ranges from a snack to a three course meal. I had a particularly good steak, but vegetarians are also well catered for. An obvious place to eat a pre-theatre supper, but also a good choice even if not attending a performance. We arrived for an early supper at about 18.00, but fairly soon the bistro got very busy before the performance in the Theatre. The apple strudel for dessert was also very good. I would be very happy to eat there again.

This a favourite haunt of my family and an absolute must if you are visiting this charming university town. The game is mouthwatering and the steaks like butter! This is old fashioned Deutsche Kueche at its best. Go for Frischlingskeule. Goose and duck are also sublime! Bregenwurst mit Gruenkohl and Bratkartoffeln.......lecker!Dessert has to be Rote Gruetze.Spiffing restaurant!
Where to eat German food in Goettingen: The Best Restaurants and Bars

Good, wholesome German food, very nice biergarten. But during lunchtime, and particularly when combined with the weekend brunch, very crowded with inadequate personnel. Takes forever to get an English-language menu, very, very long time for your food to arrive, but all this is different after, say, 2 p.m., so my impressions are mixed.

This restaurant is located in the total city center, easily accessible on foot from anywhere. Although inside there is a cosy atmesphere, we prefered to sit outside and enjoy nice weather. The service was really express (3 different waiting, although the main one was not so driendly-looking). Prices are affordable, you can choose from main menu or seasonal offer. A draught dark beer was a surprise for me, cause it's almost always offered only in a bottle. The best of all - the meals!!! OMG, that was probably the biggest and tastiest schnitzel I've ever seen in my life! And fresh salad aside is a standard, which is nice. Apart from that, you don't need to worry to use the toilet - small but straight. All in all, no 1 in GÃ for me!!!
