Denmark's largest island is so much more than simply the home of the country's dynamic capital, Copenhagen. Zealand also offers a delightful array of holiday homes and villas, pleasing harbors and sandy beaches, fringed by forests where castles lurk. Major destinations include the UNESCO-designated, Dutch Renaissance-style Kronborg Castle in Helsingor and the Viking attractions, cathedral and music festival of Roskilde. To the south bobs a flotilla of beautiful and relatively untouched islands.

After seeing many positive reviews of Assistens Cemetery, we decided to pay it a short visit during our recent weekend stay in Copenhagen. it is a walking distance from Botanical Gardens, King's Gardens and Rosenborg castle. Assistens is a final resting place of Hans Christian Andersen, as well as Soeren Kierkegaard. Enjoy the serenity and magic of this place.

Mindelunden in Ryvangen is the official Danish memorial cemetery for members of the Danish resistance movement who fell during the Second World War. On August 29, 1943 the military area of Ryvangen was occupied by German forces, who then used this location to execute and bury members of the resistance. After the war, 202 bodies were discovered in the area, 94 of these were executed by firing squad. Today it is possible to enter the area where the Danish resistance fighters were shot and see the burial ground where many of them are reinterred. Visitors can also experience several monuments made to honor the Danes who died fighting the occupying power. All this in a very quiet and beautiful prevented park.
A beautiful and peaceful park in memory of the Danes who died in the struggle for freedom during the Second World War. Either as resistance fighters executed by the German occupying forces, or as soldiers in Allied service fell in battle, or as sailors died while sailing in convoy service. Honored be their memory.
