Catacombe di San Gennaro

Around the origin of our Catacombs much has been discussed, they were simpleburial and never were quarries or underground ways; the first note of the monumentis repeated since the death of St. Agrippino our bishop in the II century, when hisbody was buried there in a noble tomb. Many miracles the saint operated by thetomb, so it became a place of reverence and neapolitan wished to be buried in thatplace.

We visited the catacombs found in the Sanita area of Naples with anticipation - never been in catacombs before. This is a social enterprise run by a foundation that uses the proceeds to fund extra services for the young people of the area which is deprived. It's fantastic to see a group use an asset so well for the benefit of the community and, while the tour is totally worth the entry fee, it's nice to know that the ticket price benefits others. The tour is engaging and well delivered. The history and stories related are accessible. Our guide was excellent - well informed and great at answering questions. The catacombs are Christian and pre-Christian, and very atmospheric. Highly recommended.

Every American should visit this cemetery when in the area or even make a special trip to see it! The American Battlefield Commission does a wonderful job of maintaining this cemetery. There’s a 7 minute video everyone should see. Learn things like: Two Medal of Honor Recipients 30 sets of brothers 29 Tuskegee Airmen Aircrew members buried together who died on the same day 7,856 service members buried here 490 unknown burials Beautifully manicured and maintained, and a great tribute to those who gave their all.

Camposanto

The Cemetery is the last monument on Piazza del Duomo, its long marble wall flanking the northern boundary and completing its shape. It was founded in 1277.

This was part of our combo ticket for the Field of Miracles. It was worth it. Wonderful frescos inside, that are still being restored from WW II damage. This is a cemetery building, but also full of art. Get this on your combo ticket! It is amazingly quiet after the hustle and bustle of the outside.

Monumental Cemetery

Why visit a cemetery when you’re on vacation, you ask? The tombs at this Milan burial ground offer a great glimpse of Italian artistic styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Reviewed By DonnaandCraig - Doylestown, United States

The tombs of Milans famous and wealthy citizens from the 19th and early 20th centuries are large and extravagant. It's like walking around a huge, intriguing sculpture garden, it's fascinating. Well worth the visit. The China Town section of Milan is within walking distance if you want Asian food later.

Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno

The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno, planned in the 1850s in an inhabited area, lies now in an area not far from the centre of Genoa. Staglieno's architectural pattern, albeit in the forms of a mature Classicism, draws on a genre that was rather common in Europe and Italy around the mid nineteenth century. However, the peculiarity and the charm of Staglieno lie in the fact that its architecture is combined with a natural layout, a type that is much more common in northern European cemeteries like, for example, the Pere Lachaise in Paris. It currently covers an area of 300.000 sqm.

Poggioreale

Reviewed By elana25

IL ‘68 CULTURA E SAPORI..."THE '68 CULTURE AND FLAVORS ... Cultural Association " This cultural association arranged a tour of the ruins of Poggioreale, as well as, a tasting of local foods. The group included myself and 7 family members from the United States and members of my family that live near Poggioreale. For 6 of my family members this was the first trip to Sicily. The members of Il ’68 arrived at the meeting point in their vintage Fiat and we followed them to the ruins. An architect and another guide led us on a tour of the ruins – so informative and professionally presented. Then we were delighted to enjoy a tasting of local food with family members under a pavilion very near the entrance to the ruins. After the tasting we were given more information on the devastating earthquake of 1968. This earthquake wreaked havoc on the Belice Valley – the home of my ancestors. Il ’68 presented us with souvenir plaques with various images of our ancestral home, Salaparuta – located very near the ruins for Poggioreale. If you are planning a visit to this area I would highly recommend this cultural association to provide a slice of Sicily that you will always remember. Thank you for making a wonderful day for my family.
