The picturesque wooden church of S:t Maria, built in 1703, is home to the parish of Houtskar. Take a moment to enjoy the calm inside the church, then take a stroll through the graveyard where generations of Houtskar's past lay buried. Please pay attention and respect the functions (funerals, christenings..) taking place in the church. No bikes allowed.

The beauty and gracefulness of this cemetary is best expressed either on a cold snow-covered winter day or on a warm sunny summer day. Hietaniemi is open to the public, and has many paths to wander about and discover a plethora of different and often astonishing gravestones from the humblest tombstones to some prominent families' ornate displayes. Don't miss the soldiers' memorial where many fallen heroes rest, and close by are some graves of late presidents of Finland.

German soldiers’ cemetery at Norvajärvi, 18 km north of Rovaniemi. The mausoleum is the resting place for more than 2500 Germans who fell in the Second World War. Open to the public April-September. At other times by special arrangement.
We had couple of hours at our hands while waiting a train at Rovaniemi. Instead of the usual sightseeing we decided to try something different and this was totally worth it. It takes about 30min drive from Rovaniemi centrum to reach the parking lot followed by 10min walk down the forest path. We had a 4-year-old with us and the walk was suitable for him. He was mostly focused on the blueberries by the path! The memorial site itself is strikingly quiet. It's dark and cold inside the building and it's at the same time very beautiful and distressing place. After one year I still remember the exact feelings I went through when visiting the memorial site.
