Getting its name from the medieval Duchy of Limburg (now split among Holland, Belgium and Germany and the birthplace of the infamously pungent Limburger cheese), Limburg is the Netherlands’ southernmost region. Many of the area’s best attractions are concentrated in the capital of Maastricht, but other sights include the 12th-century Valkenburg castle ruins, the 17th-century Eijsden castle, the 20th-century Glaspaleis (built next to a medieval church at Heerlen), and De Meinweg National Park.

Stichting Kasteel van Valkenburg (Valkenburg Castle Foundation) was founded in 1924 with the objectives of preserving the Velvet Cave and the ruins of Valkenburg Castle (the Netherlands’ only hilltop castle), as they are now, for future generations and keeping both of these national monuments safe and accessible.
It was quite sunny when we visited. There were plenty of information boards put up to read and know about the history behind the various areas in castle ruins which made it quite interesting. In the guided tour for velvet caves, you must wear a jacket. It was COLD down there. The only negative was that they only do Dutch Language tours.

Hoensbroek Castle is one of the largest and most beautiful castles in the Netherlands. The oldest section of the castle structure dates from 1250. The 40 different beautiful halls and rooms in the castle will take you on a fantastic journey through time. Discover the gorgeous ballroom, let the shivers run down your spine in the dungeon, and climb the 60 m high medieval look-out/defensive tower.
Visited here with guest as a result of the reviews and it did not disappoint - it was a nice day so went in primarily to wander round the grounds (no manicured gardens but pleasant and green) but spent the whole time looking at all the rooms, up and down staircases (alternative access possible but ask ahead), in the dungeon, in the attic. Really well done so that you get enough information and anecdotes of people who passed through from centuries ago to recently, without being overwhelmed. Spent so much time we even missed the cafe in the courtyard which looked lovely! Very impressive castle - and on the list if you have an annual all-Netherlands castle entry card.

After years of abandonment and ruination comes the plan to restore this Slot. Informative "office" and good guide explained the history and future of this castle
