Coronavirus 2019-nCoV In connection with the current situation, Loket Castle is closed from 18 December 2020 until further notice to the public. The Loket castle, built of stone, is more than 800 year old settlement, positioned on a granite rock that is runaround by the river of Ohre. It was most probably founded as a frontier fortress. The castle served to kings, Lords of Schlick and Lords of Plauen, Loket´s townsmen and it was used as prison in 19th and 20th century. Shortly after 1989, it was open for public. The tour leads through expositions of porcelain, collections of former town museum, museum of arms to the premises of former prison where an impressive and authentic demonstration of torture can be seen.
When you think this castle was in a very poor state in the early 50s, it is a kind of miracle to be able to visit a very nice, well organized and attractive renovated history inheritage (thank you EU funds). I recommend taking the 45-60 minutes tour. Thisus place went through so many hands it has a rich and various history. In particular, the torture rooms are worth the visit, just make sure you brief your kids before... Our tour guide was great, engaged and involving visitors. We enjoyed it ????

...one of few showing the real interiors of the rooms as they appeared during the stay of the owner Klement Wenceslas Lothar Johann Nepomuk, the second Prince of Metternich who occupied between 1809 and 1848 the post of Austria's Minister of Foreign Affairs. In addition, he became the State Chancellor of Austria in 1821. Between 1820 and 1839 the architect Pietro Nobile conducted the remodelling of the castle in the style of Viennese Classicism. Prince Metternich used to stay in this castle and welcome many high ranking persons here. There is a large park around the castle for nice walks, there is also large hotel and restaurant very close to the castle ( used to be castle outbuildings ) There are excursions in the period costumes several times a year during the summer holidays. We visited one and it was very nice. See their web site for dates. Early booking is recommended
