Great stay, but the value equation is a bit tough

Reviewed By telamm

We stayed with our 4 year old daughter and shared a suite tent that had a king bed and pullout sofa. There are a couple of things that are excellent, and a couple things that bug me. PROS: 1. The staff were all excellent. From the restaurant to the guest services folks, everyone was so nice and helpful. They seemed genuinely interested in your plans and truly wanted to help all they could. 2. They have programming at night to help pass the time. 3. The quality of the food from the restaurant is excellent (but there is a con associated with the cost). 4. The bed was very comfortable 5. We experienced no problem with the hot water during our stay 6. Location is close enough to town CONS: 1. The cost - the amount paid is significantly more than its value. For the amount we paid, I would almost expect full board. 2. The cost - and once you are there, the restaurant is very high. Two modest entrees and a kids grilled cheese was over $60. 3. Lack of wifi - while the lack of wifi is marketed as a benefit - the opportunity to disconnect - it is necessary. I understand the concept, but the reality is you are likely traveling as a tourist and need to plan the next day around weather changes, etc. We don't need high speed access for videos, etc., but having enough access in the absence of mobile signal to plan is essential. 4. The lack of household power outlets - this is supposed to be glamping. They provided us with two rechargeable battery powered tabletop fans. But the fans do not draw enough power or charge at a rate high enough to run all night. In addition, they only have a limited number of USB plugins. We brought a box fan from home with hopes of plugging it in, but could not. The lack of ambient noise at night was difficult. We weren't hot at night, but needed better ambient noise to drown out other guests, etc. For $400-500 per night, it is not a high expectation to have a power outlet that can power a boxfan. 5. You are required to park a little far from your tent in my opinion. They will help you with your bags if you ask, but it seemed like you could at least drive up to your tent to pack and unpack and then park elsewhere to not disturb in the mornings starting up, etc. 6. While the tents are spaced relatively well, you can hear everything from the bathroom to conversations. See #4. As nice as everyone was, I do not think we would return. I would only recommend it for a day or two. I might not be so harsh if the price we paid was not so high. Ultimately, it is only marginally better than regular camping at a nice campground with a nice bathhouse.

The grounds are beautiful However the pool is way to small for the number of campers and lodge. Campers are parked tightly together. Rules were posted but not many followed them. Many children unsupervised on the playground and in the pool. Upset to see people leaving their drink cups and trash at the pavilion by the playground. The staff was friendly and helpful.

DO NOT stay here!

Reviewed By Y2954QOtomw

I never write reviews but you should know this place before you book. Our party reserved 4 campsites and 3 tiny homes this past weekend. -Just prior to our arrival we received a call saying my campsite had been changed due to a broken water line. When we arrived our original site was actually occupied and were then told that month to month campers take precedent over weekend stays. -Our new site had a clogged sewer drain and I had to use 2 hoses to reach the water source. -One member of the party had hundreds of bugs in their tiny home due to windows left open. -Another member of the group reserved a 3 bedroom tiny home and we’re placed in a 2 bedroom with no adjustment to the price. -Another RVer in our group had a broken water valve at their site and had to run their lines to the adjacent site. This is a shame because the view of the lake/river is great, but the upkeep and management is horrible.

I would not stay here again. I will say, the bathhouse was nice. But the sites are all built on rock. The dog run is the size of a postage stamp and is gravel without any grass. The RV sites are narrow and the pool is nothing special. If all you’re looking for is a place to park your RV while you go explore pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, then this might be the place for you

Clabough's Campground

The Clabough family has lived in Pigeon Forge for five generations and in the Smoky Mountain region for a lot longer. William Clabough, a Civil War veteran, bought the original property in the late 1800s. He was a Union soldier and was drawing a small pension when he settled in Pigeon Forge. The Knoxville Chancery Court records show that he sold it to Clyde, one of his nine children, in 1922 when he was about 80 years old. Clyde had a dowry and bought everyone else out. He was a carpenter and built several barns in Sevier County. His two sons, Harold and William Clyde “W.C.” eventually helped him finally pay off the property. The Clabough’s farm had cattle and grew enough wheat to feed the family, tomatoes, hay and a little cash crop like corn. Harold, now 90 years old, said, “We had a good life here on the farm. We always had plenty to eat.” Things got better during the Second New Deal in 1935, Roosevelt started the Farm Security Administration (FSA) which was an effort during the Depression to combat American rural poverty by helping poor farmers buy land, and that program continues to operate in the 21st century as the Farmers Home Administration. The goal was to make the farmer more efficient so the loans were used for new machinery, trucks, or animals, or to repay old debts. “We operated our own farm with horses – no tractors, no electricity,” said Harold. “We didn’t have indoor plumbing until 1948. That was a treat when we got that put in.” Born on November 1, 1923, Harold’s first memories of the property are of the original farmhouse built in the 1800s that is still standing and the pecan tree next to it. He and his brother, W.C., grew up working chores on the farm, but went on their separate career paths. Harold attended Pine Grove School and graduated with a class of 4 people, then worked at TVA for 9 years, taught school for 4 years and served in the military for 32 years. His brother, W.C., served the military in New Guinea, the Dutch East Indies, the Philippines and Spain. He was a veteran of World War II and after 17 years of service, received a medical discharge. Upon his death in the 1980s, the land came to be Harold’s. Little by little, the land being farmed shrank and in 1980 Harold started building the Campground, officially opening in 1981. Gradually, Harold acquired a little more land to build the store that still services campers today, offering Exxon gasoline and a small deli that the locals frequent as much as the out-of-town visitors. “We made good money out of the small campground so I decided to add more sites.” Harold was a sharp businessman and the Campground grew from 83 to 116 sites, and then 150 when new property was added. Today, Clabough’s Campground, has 325 camping sites plus cabin, cottage and vacation rentals. Harold and his wife of 58 years, who passed away in 2006, worked the business with their only daughter and son-in-law and two grandsons. After a career at First Federal and Rural Housing Authority, son-in-law Ronnie Russell took on the role of General Manager in 1978 and has overseen new water lines, new concrete patios, new sewer lines and updating the cabins every couple of years. “You cannot stay the same. You’ve got to work at making it better,” Ronnie said, “I want our campground to be known as the best one in the area. It’s like anything. You take care of it, because it’s all you have. Our goal is to try to make it better. People come here, and we are proud to say they leave happy.” The original farm was about 50 acres and today the property is about 50 acres. The Appalachian Mountains have seen a big boom as tourism took center stage for the Smokies, but really the families and their values have not changed. You still only need a handful of change to buy an ice cream and Harold’s philosophy of “you never hurt someone else to help yourself” shows up in every detail of the business. “We keep it clean. We have all the conveniences. If you have any problem while you are here, come see us,” said Harold. Throughout his long life, he has seen his childhood home evolve into a multi-facetted modern family-friendly vacation destination. While still active and on-site, it is younger generations that handle the day-to-day operations. Harold summed it best when he said, “The campers have been so good to us. Campers are good people.”

Great campground. Friendly staff. Breakfast at the grill is delicious and good price. Love the bath house. And grandbabies loved the pools and playground. Also had movie night and karaoke. Was disappointed the lazy river was not available but they are redoing it and another pool maybe, not sure. Will definitely be staying again next year. Convenient location.

Mountain Glen RV Park has always been one of our favorite places to stay. It is a very peaceful, family, and pet freindly campground. There are many outdoor games available to play, and they also have an indoor game room for rainy days. They have a realy nice lake to fish (catch and release) and nice trails to hike. Now with a new owner and new management they are improving an already great campground. They have plans to redo the campground, by reducing the # of sites, and making the sites more spacious. They have also added a spa room, which includes a salt room, saunas, and a massage chair. My wife and daughter had a session in the salt room and sauna and were so relaxed from them they had the best night of sleep they have had in a long time. I used the massage chair and would recommend it to everyone. The new staff is extremely friendly and ready to help with any needs that come up. I give them 5 stars and would recommend this campsite to everyone.
