Top 10 Campgrounds in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

April 26, 2023 Darwin Bolte

The most populous (with 18 million people) and westernmost (bordering Belgium and the Netherlands) of Germany's federal states, North Rhine-Westphalia is one of Europe's most highly industrialized areas, with an impressive 30 cities of more than 100,000. Cologne is the district's biggest city, and the capital is Dusseldorf. Bonn, the former capital of West Germany, is also here. All three are part of the Rhine-Ruhr region of nearly 12 million people, one of Europe's biggest metropolitan areas.

Double Room, Double Price

Reviewed By BurntWombat

Convenient for a retirement party being held nearby, the room was warm (despite snow outside) and comfortable, but basic. As others have stated, the local timber-yard gives the air a woody odour, but this is neither unpleasant nor unpleasant. Reception was in the restaurant, being friendly but a little disorganised. This later aspect probably explains why I found my charge card billed twice for a one night stay. With no response to emails requesting correction, I had to go through the credit card company to reclaim the spurious charge - many thanks. But for this black mark, the price to facility ratio would have merited a better score.

Disgusted, after telephone booking 4 days in advance I arrived at the reception with my family and was told you can't enter because you are an "English gypsie" I tried to explain it was our company van and I am not working, only using it" the van" as my transport home to England. then told e I have to make a booking in writing in advance to enter the campsite and the' pre booked telephone conversation didn't interest him. I felt sick to the stomach as I briefly thought about about the German citizen that had attempted ,but failed to break into a Jewish synagogue and shot a passer- by instead in the german city of Halle earlier in the week. All the time I tried to explain my case the very rude man in charge just laughed at me ,how do they get away with this attitude ,I'd be scared to use this campsite

GREAT OVERNIGHT STOP

Reviewed By maz b

This will be the third time we have used this Stellplatz. The first two times were coming back in the motorhome from ski ing. From here its only 3.5 hours to Calais so its perfect for stopping overnight before catching the ferry lunch time the next day. Its a short tram ride away from the centre or a 30 minute walk. There is bread delivery in the morning included in the 17 euro price, which sounds steep but it includes water and power, is very convenient for the lovely city, huge gravel pitches and is surrounded by trees. Although we didn't need it there is a shower and toilet facility here. Fill in the form at reception if there is no one there and post through the letter box with your money. easy. Very clean. Oh and doggies are allowed too.

Sehr ruhig!

Reviewed By besseresser24

Erholungsgebiet Waldvelen

Just perfect: location, houses, the owners; great experience even during winter!

Reviewed By sofiacrater

We spent 3 days at Erholungsgebiet Waldvelen because my cousin was going to get married at the Sport Schloss Velen that weekend. What a good surprise! Everything seemed to be perfect: the owners are super nice, welcoming and helpful, it’s very close to the city center and the houses that we rented were just perfect: nicely decorated, totally equipped, clean, spacious… It must a perfect choice for the summer, because even with all the snow that we got while we stayed there, we enjoyed a lot and the price was very fair for all we’ve got. The property itself (the whole place, not only the houses) is wide and very easy to get to. It seems to be a very good place to stay with better weather, because it offers many different facilities to children and there’s plenty of information for bike tours in the region. The owners were kind enough even to send the bride and groom a marriage gift… I’d definitely stay there again and would recommend it to anyone!

Camping Perlenau Monschau

Lovely camping spot in a calm valley.

Reviewed By wouts946

The camping spot was good, and the location is magnificent. The camping is located in a calm valley near the picturesque village of Monschau. Getting there is a bit of a walk, about 2km of rather steep paths, but the trail is quite pretty. It is a great place to camp for a few days when doing a backpacking trip.
