Top 10 Campgrounds in French Polynesia, French Polynesia

May 5, 2023 Jana Sager

Tahiti and Bora Bora are the most well known French Polynesian islands, thanks to their picture-perfect beaches and romantic ambiance. Indeed, these islands are ideal for handholding, with their lush landscapes and mood-setting features like lagoons and grottos. The heart-shaped island of Mo’orea makes a wonderful base for divers and snorkelers eager to explore its surrounding barrier reef system. Feeding the massive, sacred eels of Huahine is a one-in-a-lifetime way to experience an important local ritual.

La Pension Manava

Our first week in French Polynesia

What a great experience at Pension Manava. Roselyne and Andrew make you feel welcome for the first moment you arrive until you, sadly, must leave. The bungalows are perfect. Fans, comfortable beds, the breakfast is great. Andrew heads into town,Uturoa, for fresh baguettes every morning. The fruit on the island is always ripe and easy to eat. We had a dinner catered in and it was beyond special Hoani, their son, is an excellent guide on the land and at sea. He is a great boats man and knows his way around the waters. This is our first trip to Raiatea, but not our last and the same for Pension Manava. Maruuruu to the Brotherson Family.

Tend

Perfect camping with share kitchen and facilities, nice shops around and perfect beach. Is what you are looking for. Unfortunately there is no dormitory so the only cheap way is by tend. They should do it. Friendliness of the staff isn’t the higher but it looks like this is common in Polynasia. Probably because is low season.

Nice place in a great location

Great location, the beach is as advertised. We booked the honeymoon bungalow, which was a little closer to everything than I expected so privacy and quiet is not a guarantee. The commons area is great, if you have a larger group, this really extends your area. If you are not in that group it can feel like you are intruding on a gathering. Perhaps it depends if you are there over the weekend when locals might come and rent a number of units? The car they have for rental is great and a bargain at a $100 for 8 hours, we really enjoyed our day rolling around in it. This hotel is near a ton of restaurants, shopping and night life. Saturday and Sunday we listened to local bands playing. The units ( or our unit was small) expect close quarters. But really, you fly here to be outside staring at a gorgeous sunset or exploring the island. We did not try the breakfast. Enjoy the local sting ray doing morning laps in front of you or the black tipped sharks circling at night.

Great experience in a remote location!

Reviewed By GoPlaces79825

40 minutes away from the main town Uturoa (you need a car, scooter or bike), nature all around, the landscape is really beautiful. Great rooms with spectacular views, spacious terrace, net over the bed, mosquito coils provided, nice little beach with beds and kayaks available, wifi. Louise and Cyrille are very nice and helpful. Buy your food when you arrive on Raiatea since there's nothing closeby. It is a lodge in the middle of the forest and you will be in contact with nature over there, it is an amazing experience (but if you are looking for the 4-5 stars hotel next to the beach, this is not your place). If you love nature, stay there!

Single Best Trip Ever!

Reviewed By ytphung

Wow, what can I say that others haven't already below? To start, it was hands down the best trip my partner and I have ever taken. We try to travel extensively, but our experience in Bora Bora will forever be a top-notch vibrant and spectacular memory. Without any plans really, we flew into Bora Bora and literally called Noel the next day to make a reservation. He immediately picked us up in Matira village and drove us to his house. There, he gave us a giant tuna to take over to the motu for dinner and took us over to the island by boat. The place itself, officially called "Motu Cafe" is without a doubt amazing. The view right from the outdoor kitchen/bar area looks straight dead on to Mount Otemanu, the iconic extinct volcano seen in glossy travel brochures and magazines. The sunset and sunrise from this spot were to die for, I could not tear my eyes away from the stunning scenery. The campsite comprises a large sheltered bar area made mostly from coconut trees (you'll soon learn that Maupiti aka Mana is ridiculously resourceful...ask him to play beer pong and see what materials he conjures up). There's also a big fire pit for grilling, basic bathroom/shower (bucket for flushing, running water when generator's on, strong sulfur smell you get used to), hammock, paddle board, snorkeling gear, private connected houses that belong to Mana in the back, and many table/seat areas. Everything is pretty basic, but as frequent campers, we thought it was more than enough. Heed the mosquitos though and do bring repellant and a net or buy incense from the store - they tend to bite especially in the morning and when there's no wind. As far as cooking, everything's supplied inc. a burner, sink, utensils, drinking water. We bought a lot of pasta/couscous/baguettes/pate that kept us going throughout the day during our long water excursions. Our daily "itinerary" consisted of: gorgeous sunrise, boat ride from Bora Diving Center (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) to the instructor's reef pick of the day, lunch near Matira, swimming at Matira Beach, traipsing around the main island via scooter/walking/Noel's family until sunset where Mana gave us a ride back to the motu. Dinner was often cooked by Mana - the meals were incredibly authentic with dishes like poisson cru au lait de coco (my personal fav), tuna steak, grilled chicken, coconut/banana salad, etc. I definitely suggest learning how to open coconuts as they're plentiful on the island as well as grapefruit. Eating was followed by many nights drinking Hinano (local beer of choice) under the stars surrounded by two playful puppies and a cheerful fire. We had some of our best moments letting the evening fade like this. Noel's family was incredibly welcoming and hospitable. Seriously, any needs/possible wants are considered and taken care of. We had a lot of flexibility getting a boat ride back to the motu whenever we wanted. It felt genuinely nice to be invited for dinner with the family and getting the chance to sample fafaru (raw fish delicacy of sorts favored by Polynesians) at their house located right on the beach. The French language barrier was difficult at times, and between everyone, there was a lot of exchange and use of French/Tahitian/English words and much gesturing - the learning curve hit hard and quick. His daughter also took us for a drive around the whole island and we got to visit Vaitape. Luckily for us, the traditional Heiva Festival started when we were there, and the whole village transformed into an absurdly bright and beautiful town filled with vividly decorated weavings, art, and flowers. At the end of our trip, we were very sad to have to say goodbye to a family that treated us like family. Also, our main host Mana is a major reason why Bora Bora exceeded our traveling expectations. Spend some time with him and you'll see that there's a sincere connection to be made. He went above and beyond to make sure that we were truly comfortable and happy without us ever having to ask. My thoughts constantly drift to our time on the motu. As far as sky high costs go in an uberly commercialized travel hotspot, this option allowed us more opportunities for diving, more food/drink sampling, and ways to see much of what the island has to offer. In summary, it's basic camping packed with a phenomenal view and even more gracious hosts. An experience not to be missed! Thank you Patu family! :) (*Tip: Noel can be reached via mobile at 689 259580 or 689 301268)
