Top 10 Bus Tours in Tunis, Tunis Governorate

October 21, 2021 Brain Ambrose

Founded by the Berbers in the 2nd millennium BCE, the city of Tunis has been controlled by Phoenicians, Romans, Arab Muslims, the Ottomans, the Spanish, the French and the Germans, finally achieving independence as the capital of Tunisia in 1956. This history has made Tunis a mélange of ancient and modern cultures. The medina is a network of narrow alleyways, mosques, mausoleums, palaces and a souq where shoppers haggle over the price of everything from filigreed gold to inexpensive souvenirs.

This place is so serene, so beautiful, so worth a visit. I fell in love with this place the minute we arrived and I had the bombolini. You must try the donuts. The art pieces are really nice here, also. The flowers have a deep color hue. The white walls all over. It is just a must see location. If you have time spend a full day here. There is plenty to do and is not that far from Tunis.

Our guide, Nourri, was fantastic. We were picked up at our hotel and he reviewed the itinerary for the day to make sure it met our expectations before we left. Nouri was extremely knowledgeable, like a history professor, and helped us to appreciate the rise of the Phoenicians prior to Rome’s rule. We started in Kairoouoam, which included a stop at a historical site and and a Mosque that included the tomb of a very important figure of the Islamic religion. Nourri also explained how the Maribou, or village elders were honored and respected. Normally this stop would also include a visit to a rug merchant but we were not interested so we skipped that. The last stop in El Djem, site of the third largest Colosseum, was breathtaking and well worth the 2 hour drive from Tunis. We had lunch at a little cafe overlooking the entrance to the Colosseum, which was owned by a jolly man who saved money by selling postcards so he could eventually buy his own restaurant. He was a really fun man with a bright smile. With 23 years experience, Nouri helped us to appreciate a LOT of the history of the area which really brought the experience to life! If the City of Tunis is a little overwhelming for you, than would highly recommend getting out into the countryside where we felt very safe and welcomed.

Nouri was extremely knowledgeable, like a history professor, and helped us to appreciate the rise of the Phoenicians prior to Rome’s rule. Highlights of Carthage include an aqueduct and reservoir and the remains of a colosseum. Sidi Bou Said, in fairness was a bit dilapidated compared to other tourist sites and had a fair amount of garbage etc which ultimately detracted from our enjoyment. We finished the day at the Bardo Museum, which was also very good. Nouri helped us to appreciate a LOT of the history of the area which really brought the experience to life. Highly recommend Nourri as a guide. Entrance fees to Carthage and Bardo Museum are not include so plan on about $4-$8 USD person for each. Having a guide helped us save a ton on the price of some items we purchased - ii.e. We paid 110 dh for and item that was marked at 300 dh. Keep in mind with a guide, there is little room left over for haggling as you typically get the best price from the start. Nourri also took us through the Médina and it was nice to have someone to help navigate and make sure we were getting a fair deal. Highly recommend having a guide and in particular Nourri - who has over 20 years experience as a registered guide.

A great guide with excellent local knowledge. As a female lone traveller, I felt very comfortable and could freely ask questions; Nadhmi also offered the right amount of space to explore freely. Nadhmi is not just a guide but was really helpful in just getting your bearings: I was based in Tunis (which his not the easiest place to navigate), I was advised to get a sim card which proved invaluable. He really cares that you have an enjoyable experience, made helpful suggestions and of course things to avoid. No reflection on the guide by the system of booking: once your trip is confirmed have a conversation and double check your location with your guide just to make sure your location is where you think it is. Nadhmi is an excellent guide and would highly recommend. Thank you!

The tour was amazing! We enjoyed the Medina in Tunis, walked around the market, had coffee in a traditional place and ate at a wonderful traditional place, recommended by the guide. Carthage was also exceptional with amazing roman ruins that we enjoyed and Sidi Bousaid was just magi. White houses with blue windows and particular decorations, friendly people, amazing coffee and stunning views of the city. Definitely recommended! The guide was very friendly, helpful and brought us to the nicest places. Don’t miss it!!
