We enjoyed excellent food served, freshly cooked to perfection, even for someone who is very particular about how a steak is cooked. It was served hot where appropriate and portion size was generous. We had starters, mains and desserts on both nights of our recent short break, with both of us trying different dishes, so we got to sample a lot more of the menu. Really genuinely friendly and helpful staff who made every effort to ensure everything was perfect made the whole experience a real treat. One important note we really appreciated that in these difficult and challenging times of Covid19 we felt safe seeing the extra space given between diners with the obvious reduced capacity.

Tropical World

Open seasonally, Tropical World at Alcorn’s, Letterkenny, has best be described by patrons as both “Donegal’s hidden gem” and the “one must see attraction to visit in Donegal”. Tropical World is a fully licensed zoo with an astonishing array of animals, from a dazzling display of butterflies to the world’s smallest monkeys alike. The incredible butterfly house is still the star attraction, with hundreds of amazing tropical butterflies in free-flight around you as you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the rainforest. Leave Letterkenny’s own slice of the Amazon and you’re greeted by the sounds from the tree topped canopies, with beautiful birds of all shapes and sizes from around the globe calling you on. Only after you reach the reptile house can you begin to meet the lemurs and miniature primates that call Tropical World home, along with owls, prairie dogs, our family of Meerkats.

We spent a very enjoyable day here yesterday with our 6 year old and 1.5 year old despite the fact that the weather wasn’t so great! Most of Tropical World is undercover so the fact it was raining when we arrived didn’t matter. Thankfully it dried up for long enough that we got to the outdoor parts but we were told to come back to reception and borrow umbrellas if it was still raining! There is a great selection of animals and birds as well as an undercover play area which our two loved. The six year old was just mesmerised by all the animals, especially when she got to hold a bearded dragon and touch a snake!!! She also loved the butterfly house where the butterfly’s fly freely around you, we even saw one land on someone! The 1.5 year old didn’t have the same interest obviously but was still happy to spend a few hours here. We also ate at the wee cafe on site and the food was gorgeous! We will definitely be back when we’re back in letterkenny!
