The history of this legendary castle goes back 800 years. For a long time, Kalmar Castle was an important fortification and known as the key to the kingdom because of its strategical location. The Swedish-Danish border was located only a short distance to the south, because Scania and Blekinge were Danish territories at the time. Kalmar Castle was given its current design during the 16th century, when the Vasa kings Gustav, Erik XIV and Johan III rebuilt the medieval castle and made it into a Renaissance palace, furnished and decorated in continental fashion. Even before then the castle had played an important role in Nordic politics, for example as the location for the signing of the Kalmar Union in 1397. This event was celebrated during the whole year of 1997, the union's 600th anniversary. Kalmar Castle is a symbol for Kalmar. The castle's history features international politics, court intrigues, fiery sieges and fierce battles. Today the castle is vibrant and lively place where many people visit.
Highly recommendable to visit! Fantastic medieval castle with authentic sceneries. Would be good though to read-in a bit on the history before visiting.

Sonething for everyone at this great county museum in Kalmar. Historical interactive teater for children (in Swedish) about the Regal ship Kronan. Plenty of other children's activities. Interesting Historical and cultural exhibitions for all.. Great lunch café!

The experience of seeing a moose so close, being able to feed them and even pet is not something you can have "in real life", so having this kind of park is absolutely fantastic! The park itself is not very big, but is just enough for its purpose! We get on a wagon and go through a fenced little forest, where the mooses and their calves are. We are given some branches of their favorite trees and then, luckily, some may get up and eat it from us. The tour takes 40-50 minutes, goes fast and does not gets boresome (at least not for us!). The guide is very pleasant and communicates well. Besides the mooses, there are also some alpacas in a different fenced area. And there is a pond where it's possible to fish rainbow trouts. The souvenir shop has really beautiful and high-quality products - I was positively surprised! And to finish, it's possible to eat there too! Moose hamburger, moose pizza (cheese pizza with moose sausage on top) among others like sausage and waffles (I do think they also have vegetarian choices). You can get your hamburger and grill it in the barbecue house that stays close to the pond (very pleasant). Our highlight was the chocolate fudge brownie that was the best we ever had! We left there very content and will most definitely take our visitors there if we have the chance!

Katthult is the place where classic Emil films were shot in 1971-73. Experience the atmosphere in the well-preserved film setting and visit the world-famous tool shed into which Allan Edwall chased Emil so many times. Meet all the animals on the farm in the idyllic and unique environment. In the Katthult shop, you can buy souvenirs, coffee, ice cream

The farm is a lovely place for meeting the animals, touch them, learn about them and let kids take part in the activities. We have no kids, but when we have them, we will make Skälby part of our weekend strolls. There are places for a picnic in the garden, bringing your own food or taking it from the café. Absolutely recommend the visit.
