When travelling in the West, my son and I always enjoy stopping by the local rock shop to see what mineral and fossil specimens we can find and to, hopefully, add a few to our collection. We were very pleased to find that Things that Rock offered quite a few different local items at affordable prices. One of their specialties is rose quartz, relatively rare and originally discovered in the 1880’s in a large deposit in nearby Custer, we just had to pick-up a nice, well saturated specimen. Perhaps going a bit overboard, we also selected a piece of petrified wood that looks so much like wood, that you do not realize it is stone till you pick it up; an interesting piece of black tourmaline; and, my favorite, fossilized teeth from a Mesohippus, a small, extinct horse from 30 to 40 million years ago. The shop proprietors were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful so if you are interest in minerals, we would certainly recommend a stop at Things that Rock.

What a great stop on our trip through the Badlands on on our way to Mt. Rushmore. First we started with a great lunch and had a 1:30 reservation for a wine tasting. The person that served us was great and knowledgeable and we all enjoyed the interactions. The wine was really great and the history of the place and the woman who is the creator of all these wines and the adjacent brewery has mad skills. This is worth the stop and we will enjoy some of this wine here in upstate New York.

There are a lot of great dinosaur fossils on display, not all are genuine fossils but rather copies of other fossils, but they do state on each if it is real or a copy (otherwise hard to tell) A great range of big and small, 3 that you can touch. it's all crammed into an old basketball court though so very hard to get good pictures. But still well worth it. Gift shop has a huge variety including kids toys, nice decorative stones, and drawers full of fossils for sale.

They sell a variety of the locally made wines in this shop and they sell wine slushies, which were amazing! We attending during the local BBQ event and found this shop by chance while walking around Main Street. So glad we did! Friendly, knowledgeable staff who like to have fun and make their customers smile. They even offered me a slice of pizza as I was waiting in line. I think that was just an employee who was in the store off the clock with some pizza being extra friendly, but I thought she was nice.

We own a cabin locally in Hill City and are working with CJ on a landscaping project. I do believe this hometown store has the BEST customer service of any business EVER! Due to flooding & heavy rains, our driveway washed out...and within an hour of a request, CJ had gravel up to the site! He worked with us on delivery to ensure our project was timely in between guests and the prices are excellent! I would recommend this shop to EVERYONE who has any project or just wants the best treasure to take home :)

Miner Brewing Company

Located in the heart of the Black Hills, Miner Brewing Company produces craft beers that are both traditional in nature, and yet truly "South Dakota." Brewmaster Sandi’s goal is to craft beers that people can enjoy every day. We want to showcase as much of the uniqueness of South Dakota as possible using local ingredients when we can. From local honey to handpicked wild fruits and indigenous yeast and hops, it all comes from South Dakota; even the wheat for our Wheat beer comes from Sandi’s family farm near Mobridge, SD. We emphasize keeping beer fresh and heavily rely on the pure mountain water we get directly from our well near the brewery in Hill City. The water is the most important ingredient in crafting our Miner Brewing craft beers, it’s from the water that we get our unique flavors and distinctive style. See what’s new on tap and enjoy a flight, pint, or growler to go today. Our winery, Prairie Berry Winery, is located next door.
