The drive from Crested Butte to Paonia passes West Beckwith Mountain, the best spot in the state to view foliage. With 50 square miles of golden aspens.
I spent 16 days from the end of September into October traveling in Colorado ,I was hoping to see the aspens in fall color and got my wish ,one of my favorite spots to see them, lodging can be tricky if you wait to book and it does get crowded but well worth seeing .

Between Crested Butte and Marble, this difficult road has narrow, steep passages.
This was the most beautiful pass of all we visited in Colorado- the beautiful meadows and wildflowers. Go as far as it is safe for your vehicle to go- we had a suburban AWD but couldn't make it all the way to the pass due to the road being washed out by a waterfall.

Crested Butte Nordic is a non profit Nordic ski area that maintains 55 kilometers of immaculately groomed trails around the Town of Crested Butte, Colorado's Nordic Town. We offer complete ski and snowshoe rental packages as well as private lessons, clinics, tours and fine yurt dining. Our Nordic Center and trail-heads are within walking distance from all of Crested Butte’s restaurants and lodgings.
Just visited Jan '21. First time 60 yo Nordic skier, so took a lesson first. Rachel was an excellent instructor. I did the trails around Town Center first, absolutely gorgeous on a bright sunny, cold day. Very well groomed trails helped, although I can state unequivocally Nordic skiing is not easy and is a great cardio workout. After Town Center, I headed to the West trails. Parked around Peanut Lake and did Pooches Paradise (the dogs are a plus; contagious to see their joy of being outdoors). Again, beautiful. But after being on my skis for the btter part of 6 hours, I was gassed. Second day I headed back to the West trails, as they are much more isolated than Town Center which is much more wide open, which is what I was looking for. But it was snowing, hard, with 25-30 MPH winds! Sounds appealing, right? But if you're a newbie, it made for an excruciating cardio workout:). The tracks were pretty much filled with the falling snow, or the snow from the skating skiers. I'd describe it at plowing through peanut butter most of the way. I did make it all the way from Pooches Paradise, to Mike's Mile turnaround, and back (beauty and solitude-I barely saw another person). It has to be one of the most gorgeous places on earth. But my calves were screaming by then. Bottom line, really glad I tried Nordic for the first time. Great workout. But I opted to head to Mt. Crested Butte for some gravity-assisted alpine skiing my last day!

The Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum preserves and shares the history, stories, and traditions of the Gunnison County. The historic Tony's Conoco (The first gas pump in town) was preserved as the basecamp of the museum, and holds permanent as well as rotating museums, features a gift shop, and hosts historic walking tours and other educational events. We also serve as a beautiful venue to host your next gathering or special event. Reach out to us directly to inquire!
There is a large area to look through for great points of interest on the history of CB,. They also have an additional area for a nominal fee. Very interesting pieces of history to learn about the area.
