The drive from Crested Butte to Paonia passes West Beckwith Mountain, the best spot in the state to view foliage. With 50 square miles of golden aspens.

Schofield Pass

Between Crested Butte and Marble, this difficult road has narrow, steep passages.

This was the most beautiful pass of all we visited in Colorado- the beautiful meadows and wildflowers. Go as far as it is safe for your vehicle to go- we had a suburban AWD but couldn't make it all the way to the pass due to the road being washed out by a waterfall.

Just visited Jan '21. First time 60 yo Nordic skier, so took a lesson first. Rachel was an excellent instructor. I did the trails around Town Center first, absolutely gorgeous on a bright sunny, cold day. Very well groomed trails helped, although I can state unequivocally Nordic skiing is not easy and is a great cardio workout. After Town Center, I headed to the West trails. Parked around Peanut Lake and did Pooches Paradise (the dogs are a plus; contagious to see their joy of being outdoors). Again, beautiful. But after being on my skis for the btter part of 6 hours, I was gassed. Second day I headed back to the West trails, as they are much more isolated than Town Center which is much more wide open, which is what I was looking for. But it was snowing, hard, with 25-30 MPH winds! Sounds appealing, right? But if you're a newbie, it made for an excruciating cardio workout:). The tracks were pretty much filled with the falling snow, or the snow from the skating skiers. I'd describe it at plowing through peanut butter most of the way. I did make it all the way from Pooches Paradise, to Mike's Mile turnaround, and back (beauty and solitude-I barely saw another person). It has to be one of the most gorgeous places on earth. But my calves were screaming by then. Bottom line, really glad I tried Nordic for the first time. Great workout. But I opted to head to Mt. Crested Butte for some gravity-assisted alpine skiing my last day!
