Reviews on British food in Cirencester, England, United Kingdom. Cirencester (/ˈsaɪrənsɛstər/ ( listen), occasionally /ˈsɪstər/ ( listen); see below for more variations) is a market town in east Gloucestershire, England, 93 miles (150 km) west northwest of London. Cirencester lies on the River Churn, a tributary of the River Thames, and is the largest town in the Cotswold District. It is the home of the Royal Agricultural University, the oldest agricultural college in the English-speaking world, founded in 1840. The town's Corinium Museum is well known for its extensive Roman collection. The Roman name for the town was Corinium, which is thought to have been associated with the ancient British tribe of the Dobunni, having the same root word as the River Churn. The earliest known reference to the town was by Ptolemy in AD 150.

We were greeted by a snappy and dismissive waiter who took offence at my choice of table. This soured our visit and my wife and I decided to leave. We had checked the menu and everything was overpriced. The look of the food from the counter did not inspire us.

I do remember calling into this pub a number of years ago when driving home from work in Oxford. Back then the pub had a very colourful sign and it was, I recall, quite a cosy and pleasantly decorated pub. Now the sign is very plain, which is representative of the interior of the pub now, very stark and basic. Reviews here on TA are generally good, so following a social engagement during the afternoon we decided to reserve a table for dinner here. We arrived a bit late but having called ahead the restaurant were able to hold our table for us.The menu was not huge and we found that there wasnât a lot of starters that we found would suit. The main courses offered more interesting choices and we both settled for the Barnsley Lamb Chops. These arrived after a bit of a wait but they were delicious, beautifully cooked with Maris Piper potato slices, tomatoes, olives, and shallots. Their wasnât a lot of meat but what meat there was, really was tender, tasty and pink. We both enjoyed this meal very much, quite complex taste with the olives and shallots. The potatoes were excellent and the green veg side was generous and one serving was enough for the two of us. The only shame was that there just wasnât enough meat - two small mouthfuls. We both felt that the lamb was expensive for what it was at £20 per head.We both decided to have dessert, with a Sticky Toffee Pudding for my partner and a Panna cotta for myself.I had no complaints about the food or service but my partnerâs Stick Toffee Pudding didnât have much toffee sauce so it wasnât very sticky. My panna cotta was quite good.Service was good and the staff were all very welcoming and were pleased to reinforce the choices we made from the menu. I cannot give this experience an âexcellentâ rating and I am torn between what would be a harsh âaverageâ and what would be an slightly over-generous âvery goodâ. In the end the food was tasty, and well-cooked so I must reward that.

Barnsley House is a country hotel like no other. Contemporary and stylish but packed with character, it is less a hotel and more your very own Cotswolds countryside retreat.
We joined friends for dinner at Barnsley House. The garden setting for pre dinner drinks was sublime. Dinner in the dining room was first rate. The starters were substantial and tasty. Three of the four diners chose the Halibut for main course which was divine. Desserts were equally as good. The meal was priced a little more than we would normally pay for a weeknight dinner (£250 for four), but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Independent restaurant serving well sourced and presented local fare. Cirencesterâs only two rosetted restaurant.
The external appearance belies the interiors old world charm and warm welcome.Hidden down one of the many charming alleyways in Cirencester next to Jessies Butchers shop we celebrated a birthday with close Family. The service was efficient but reflected the rural area in which it lies so a little slower than major city speeds. The choice of cuisine was in my view fantastic and subtle and the wine served at the right temperature which even in fining dining Restaurants is not always the case. The Staff discreetly even served my sweet whilst singing happy birthday.Could not have been a better evening.

Stopped by for a mid-week lunch. Enjoyed the scampi and chips. Portions were extra large so very filling, and food arrived piping hot and fresh. One criticism would be the service; the waitress who served us was very timid and we could hardly hear her despite the pub being relatively empty at the time. She was very nervous and also only brought one of the two sauces we asked for. Also didn't bother to check up on us after serving our food which was a shame. A bit more training wouldn't go a miss.Overall, If you're after a simple spot of pub grub, this place is a solid choice.

This little gem is worth going to for good value tasty food. The portions are very generous and there is something on the menu for all. The staff are lovely, friendly and efficient. There is limited seating inside but plenty of outside seating making it perfect for dog walkers. The coffee is wonderful and the homemade food is always piping hot and delicious.

Daughter suggested here, we ordered calamari, cod bites and prawns and shared, chips were good, I thought the side of garlic mayo a bit stingy, but the bread and butter gets a 10!All washed down with a bottle of Prosecco.

We had a lovely meal here during a short break. The food was incredible. Highly recommend the potted rabbit. Delicious! The staff were friendly and attentive (we were sat near a large party and the staff were always checking we were ok). Would definitely visit again.
