Been struggling to find vegetarian food whilst in Brazil but this restaurant kindly prepared me a vegetarian meal, which was large, cheap and tasty. Well done! Added to my super experience of Soure town and Marajo.

This restaurant is tiny - 2 tables inside, 1 outside if it's not raining (which it was when we were there). The inside is dark, but the décor works. It's cute and charming. The menu has crepes, salad, fish, or buffalo - except somehow on this island full of fishermen, they had no fish the day we were there. We both got the buffalo. Mine was way overcooked and tough. We watched them microwave our "oven baked potatoes" and rice. They weren't such good sides. I avoided the salad because I rarely find good salad in Brazil - but hindsight is 20/20. The people at the other table ordered one and it looked great - fresh, huge, with lots of yummy topping options. Drink options were limited to soda, beer, or cachaca. Because the owner is French, i thought there might be a wine list. There wasn't. My b. So - maybe order your meat rare, don't expect much from your sides, or stick to salad?

Patu Anu is an unsophisticated restaurant which offers the hungry traveller delicious regional cooking at very reasonable prices. My wife and I ate three times at this restaurant; invariably selecting one of several local fish as an appetizer, and buffalo steaks covered with a light cheese sauce for our main course. We were never disappointed; either with the size of the portions, the main dish comfortably serves two people, or the prompt and attentive service. Additionally the location of Patu Anu is, quite simply, admirable; less than 5 minutes walk from the ferry port and its adjacent open space. An enjoyable evening meal may be complemented by taking a relaxing stroll, in a gentle breeze, along the banks of the Rio Paracauari, ending at the Praca Da Independencia.

Solar da Bola is a casual indoor restaurant with varied menu options. As elsewhere on the island, prices are not inexpensive. I ate at Solar da Bola on 2 occasions: lunch (the heavy meal of the day) one day and on another day I visited with friends in the evening to try the famous (infamous?) turu. At lunch during the week after new years some menu items were out of stock. I had the filhote fish with rice and salad (I requested the fish grilled, it came instead breaded, after havining waited 30 minutes for the entree to emerge from the kitchen I gave no thought to requesting a change and ate what was served). Turu is a mollusc related to clams and oysters. Its appearance is that of a long white worm that lives in the trunk of mangrove trees and it eats wood. Some people clean and eat the fresh turu. The turu dish available at the restaurant was a soup made from frozen turu. The broth of the soup was tasty, the turu itself is an acquired taste. The walls of the restaurant are decorated with handicrafts, including a model of a shrimp trap.
