Top 10 Bodies of Water in Transylvania, Romania

December 24, 2021 Diedre Savory

Transylvania is a historical region in today's central Romania. Bound on the east and south by its natural borders, the Carpathian mountain range, historical Transylvania extended westward to the Apuseni Mountains. The term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also the historical regions of Crișana and Maramureș, and occasionally the Romanian part of Banat.

Emerald Lake

Reviewed By Viorel_25 - Sibiu, Romania

The Emerald Lake or Brazi Lake is located at approximately 15 minutes walk from the village. If a vehicle is available you can take the dirt road and park close to the lake. The Emerald Lake was formed inside the former Brazi basalt quarry after the mining has stopped. The basalt layers with different shapes and the color of the water are just amazing.

Ocna Sibiului Salt Mine

Reviewed By EasyFigure - Clearwater, United States

I'm biased when writing this review but it's because I spent in this place all my childhood holidays. Now an American, I miss the "mud" baths and was challenged to describe what this means to me. First of all, the "mud" is clay; not just any but a naturally enriched clay with minerals that are therapeutic for arthritis, skin issues, and others. The water has the salinity a bit less than that of the Dead Sea; the value of your money is certainly cheaper (not to deter anybody from going to Israel, on the contrary, that place is amazing on so many fronts). A bit further away from this place there is also a nudist place, something that many would walk away from; if that's your enjoyment, nobody will bother you. Eating local food is the best part of it. If the traditional music is not on your taste, move away. When I was a child there was little shade from the nearby trees; now there are restaurants, a massage service, games, and all you need to buy for a couple of dollars. Entrance is something like $3 for the entire day; beat that if you can! Making B&B arrangements in this area is better with private owners to get a real feeling of the archaic way of life. If you want to see cows returning home by themselves, pet farm animals or just simply wonder on the hills and hear the trains whistle, have the backpack experience, this is the place to be. Downtown Ocna Sibiului the internet is free though the signal is not always strong (or secure for that matter). I always enjoyed being here without wearing a watch; let time stretch out when talking with the locals, seeing the same way of life as it was 100 years ago. It's not for everyone especially Generation Z. But if you can convince a teen to join you, they might just learn about more meaningful things in life than the virtual world: social skills 101, raw nature, farming, appreciation of family. I can't wait to go back.

Is a great and beautifull place to see the nature and relax also to make some routes that you have there and to see the nature and exquisit lakes and filon of salt . The indicators are good and worth going even with children , for them to see the fish in the lakes and wild duck's . I highly recommend for anyone with a little bit of adventure in the bones :)) , worth the time you spend there seeing all lakes that are there on the routes .

Saint Anna Lake

I have long wanted to reach St. Anne's Lake. A place of special beauty, the only volcanic lake in Romania, located near the resort Tusnad. The shape of the lake resembles the palette of a painter, and the water of the lake is of a very high purity, close to distilled water. People also come on pilgrimage and pray at the stone chapel, it is said that St. Anne helps young people to find their mate.
