New York State has it all – booming metropolises, majestic waterfalls, mountains, wine country, chicken wings. Yes, NYC is a magnet for tourists, but an exploration of the rest of the state can be equally thrilling. The Finger Lakes Wine Region is a vision of serene waters, quaint B&Bs, and pretty vineyards. Movie buffs will love Rochester, home of the George Eastman House and one of the world’s most comprehensive film archives. On your way to Niagara Falls, stop in Buffalo to fuel up on spicy wings.

The rail trail is a great place to take the family! Walking, or biking, it's a great place to get your exercise, meet friendly faces, and enjoy the scenery, especially when going over the former rail road bridge that crosses the Hudson River. There are spectacular views from the bridge in all seasons.

With its new open segment, the rail trail is now about 24.5 miles in length from the hamlet of Wassaic to Orphan Farm Road, on the north side of Taconic State Park. The best part about the trail is that it combines views of woodlands, farmlands and wetlands with the Taconic Mountains framing them. While there are few services directly on the trail (The town of Millerton and the Depot Deli and Bash Bish Bicycles in Taconic State Park are exceptions) there are many options within a mile or so of the trail. As well there are some great options for other activities nearby: Alander Mountain and Bash Bish Falls are two hiking options and Copake Iron Works is an interesting historical site. Or, if shopping is more your style, Millerton has fun and unique shops.

This was the highlight to our visit to Lake George. The path was wide and paving was smooth. Well kept up, with beautiful wooded scenery. We rode from Lake George to Glenn Lake and back (12 miles total). Slight inclines and a couple of small hills.

Best place to ride/jog! Now that spring is here I live on this trail. When The weather warms up I’ll bring my kids out with me to ride.

I have used this trail about haldf a dozen times. Currently it goes from Ballston Spa to Coons Crossing. Next year, it will be extended south to Mechanicville. My favorite part is the unpaved, stone dust section from Round Lake to Coons Crossing. It is very scenic and less used than the paved section. In the Fall, the colors are spectacular. There is a 1.2 mile extension off the main trail near the Northway crossing. This alternate route is scenic, but hilly and will take you to the roundabout at US 9 and NY 67. I generally park in the center of Round Lake and then bicycle either north or south. When, you are done, stop in at Leah's for a beverage and some baked goods..
