Good Service, Good Spa but not the best in the region

Reviewed By Guide646356

My family embarked on a 5 day, onsen hotel hopping and ended at Oncri for our final night. Of all the places we stayed, this place was definitely the most underwhelming in terms of food and hot spring. Note, the service and cleanliness were top notch. Food: The food was less intricate and not as thoughtful. Highlights: the sashimi and meat main. Cons: ayu was too salty to the point of being inedible (a shame cause it’s such a good fish), the seafood hotpot was flavorless, shrimp slightly overcooked. Restaurant is slightly understaffed. Hotspring: The spa was good, however, I really disliked the strong chlorine smell on the inside (and yea.. I understand it’s needed for the inside spa where the water is circulated, just kind of sad cause for it the smell was too overpowering). The outside pools is gorgeous and well designed. The biggest sticking point for me was the water quality, it lacked the heavy mineral quality that makes your skin feel extremely smooth inside and outside the water. The other places I stayed definitely outshone Oncri

Hot spring on sand

Reviewed By kimitakas

I didn’t overnight, but just used their bath (about $10). As I went, there was no other customer, and I enjoyed bathing. The water is temperate, or rather tepid. But it is real mineral spring water. The bed of bathtub is sand, which is very rare in Japan.

Friendly experience!

Reviewed By majicka

We stayed for one night in the Yamatoya Ryokan and had a lovely time. The staff are very friendly and the lady who looked after us throughout was exceptional in both service and hospitality. We had a very large downstairs room in the ryokan and this came with a private onsen at the back of the room. The building itself also has separate male/female public onsens with one small bath outside. The food was outstanding. We had blowfish and various different seafood. The breakfast was excellent and coffee can be enjoyed at the end of your stay. This is located about one hour away from Fukuoka and recommend to anybody looking to enjoy a typical ryokan experience in Kyushu.

True Japanese Experience

Reviewed By Susan B

We stayed here for one night as part of a reunion with some former colleagues. Although it is pricey, it is well worth it for the true Japanese experience, luxurious surroundings and amazing meals included in the price. We arrived mid-afternoon and were escorted to our private cabin where we received a thorough orientation. Our Japanese is quite rudimentary so it was nice to have our friend along who could translate! The "cabin" (it's much more luxurious than that) has a tatami room with huge sliding doors, a bedroom area with a small couch and a huge deck with its own private onsen! There is also a toilet room and huge vanity but no private shower. You can use the showers in the shared onsen or do the traditional Japanese bucket routine on your private deck. Every amenity you can think of is included including pajamas. The room is minimally decorated and has exposed beams giving it a very calm feeling. We spent lots of time looking out onto the mountains, enjoying the sound of the rain. The shared onsen has two separate sections and it is changed daily so men and women can enjoy both sections during an overnight stay. One is a completely indoor pool (with the requisite "scrubbing stations" to be used prior to entering) while the other is a lovely but slightly smaller outdoor pool. I could have stayed there all day! We had a group dinner with our former colleagues in the evening and the food was spectacular. The dishes just kept coming and each one was a work of art. We learned the first course fish was caught that day by the father of the server! None of my colleagues stayed overnight so we were on our own in the morning for breakfast. It is served in private rooms in the restaurant area and is very traditional. If you aren't familiar with some of the traditional foods, you may find it a bit unusual. Breakfast also looked like a work of art and was served by the same friendly server who took care of us the night before. Even though our Japanese is bad and she spoke only a few works of English, we felt very at home and welcome. We never would have known about this place (or found it for that matter) if we wouldn't have been with some local friends. We are so happy they arranged everything for us and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. However, the website does have a great English description and a special "international guest" deal that has a great description of what you can expect. I can't wait to visit again! One night was not enough! I hope we can stay longer next time.
