Atop a lushly forested escarpment 100 feet above the turquoise and blue waters of Boston Bay and the Caribbean Sea you’ll find 17 bamboo huts and the newly appointed Royal House of Great Huts Resort, Port Antonio, a unique village resort that celebrates the Jamaican people’s West African ancestry and exalts the art, wisdom and power of Rastafari. This intimate eco-resort has a private beach and two cliff-side pools with dramatic ocean views. Over 90% of furnishings, art and decor are handmade by Jamaican artisans.
My husband, 13-year-old and I stayed at the Fig Tree for 3 days on a family vacation. We absolutely enjoyed the space, cuisine, views and staff. Breakfast was incredible, our most memorable meal was callaloo with pumpkin and homemade biscuits. The curried coconut pumpkin soup was delicious and so many more meals were as well. Between us, the onsite chef was better than the chef at Golden Eye. The staff on premises was incredibly pleasant and worked hard to accommodate anything we asked for. Deanna was lovely, as were so much of the staff. The views from Fig Tree were amazing. We enjoyed the breezes, privacy and so much of the sense of place. We felt completely connected to the staff & will likely keep in touch as they were such great people. My husband and son took private lessons from Javii on Boston Beach. He charged $50 per person which was a bit of a deal. He was fantastic. We would highly recommend. We enjoyed the pool which was a very short walk from our Hut. The ocean was perfect for swimming, surfing and was not populated with a barrage of people .We also enjoyed the views throughout the property. The beds were comfortable. If at fig tree specifically you need to remember: basic footwear for the hut and a flashlight. The bottom floor is a unlevel and this will make your stay much more enjoyable. You need to be careful when utilizing steps, they are uneven and you need to pay attention to walking. There was plenty of towels, linens and we had a small mini refrigerator in our Hut which came in handy. Don't forget shampoo, water bottles from home and bug repellent of your choice. We visited the Blue lagoon around 10:30 in the morning, which is less than 15 minutes from the facility. We were the first people to arrive. It was incredibly fantastic to have the place to ourselves. I would recommend going early. Deanna was able to give us good instructions on navigating the area. Roads were rough getting there & we have stomachs of steel. It took us about four hours or more to arrive from Kingston airport. We used the driver that was recommended however getting a driver from the airport might be more economical and just as easy. I would do research. I would also research local drivers and the Port Antonio area for alternatives as well. Overall the entire visit was incredible. We would absolutely recommend you go!! Enjoy & Take in all that this amazing place has to offer.

This place is a great base to explore the beautiful North East coast of Jamaica - which is much more unspoilt than other parts of the coast (so we’re told!) Located 30 mins from Port Antonio by taxi or route taxi (we took route taxis everywhere and they were great), it’s walking distance to beautiful Frenchman’s Cove, and just a short route taxi ride to Blue Lagoon and Winnifred Beach (150JMD pp). The guesthouse is on a hill so there are lovely views of the sea and there’s a small cove at the bottom of the hill where you can join the locals in a swim - bliss! You can have breakfast and dinner on the terrace and the waiting and reception staff are very friendly. The pool is refreshing and the rooms comfy (big beds, good aircon and hot water). It would have been nice to have more of a communal vibe but it may just be a quiet time. Not loads of eating places around unless you are happy to eat in or at nearby hotels which are a little pricier. Otherwise Boston Beach and Port Antonio are the best bets - not too far in taxis and again easy with a route taxi.

I stayed at Hotel Tim Bamboo this past weekend. Everyone was polite and helpful. The breakfast was delicious and the space was exceptionally clean. It smells clean but not "chemically". 10/10 would recommend.

Bright rooms compact but light and airy. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was really authentic and they accommodated my dietary requirements cooking really nice veggies. Some amenities restricted so no dinner service or bar and the pool was out of action at the time. Great location for making the most of what Portie has to offer. Quiet location in a lush green residential vacinity. Bathrooms had hot running water at all times with was a plus... I am from the UK but live in Jamaica we stayed for my parents birthday, they decorated the room and made it look very romantic.

4 houses with each 8 rooms are neatly scattered over a long stretch of tropical forest. The rooms are very comfortable and have all you might need during your stay. Meals are served in the restaurant at the lookout point. They are delicious but you will need some patience as service is a bit slow. Keep an eye open for parakeets in the trees around!

We stayed at the Fan villa for 2 nights and it was an exceptional stay from beginning to end. The host and staff were friendly, respectful, and very accommodating. The room was very clean and spacious with large windows that provided a fabulous view of the sea. The food was very well prepared and tasted great, there was no need to leave the property for a drink either because they had a perfectly stocked bar area to chill have a drink and a great laugh. The grounds were landscaped to perfection and was wonderful to sit and meditate to rest relax and reset. We have already begun planning our second trip to the Fan Villa it was a fantastic experience.

Previous reviewers have spoken about how basic the property is and that is fair comment but it is still good value for money. The cottage was established by a Finnish lady and her Jamaican husband Tony (hence Finjam) however she sadly passed away two years ago and Tony has kept it going. His strengths don't lie in communication (better to phone him on Whatsapp rather than text or email) or administration but what I will say is he could not have been more welcoming and helpful. My daughter came down with dengue fever and Tony made her garlic and ginger tea to help her recover. It was only 5 minutes walk from the Knutsford Express bus station (the best way to travel in Jamaica) and the Marina which has a lovely beach. Make sure you arrive when it's light, come out the bus depot, turn left, up a hill, left again at the Catholic church, left again and the top of that road on the left - lovely view over the marina. I'd far rather give my business to Jamaicans if I can than these all inclusive places that don't really benefit the local economy.

Nice quaint. But, the first house manager tried to add a few dollars in her pocket the owner had already told me how much the taxi was but when arrived it went from 5.00 to 20.00 but the owner fixed it. then ac is extra in which i wasnt aware of not listed the house manager priced me double what was quoted after i got there. She thought she was going to rack up on us. Very dishonest. I did not fill comfortable after that.but we had a second lady to come in on thu or fri cannot remember her name very kind, sweet and honest she wash our clothes and breakfast was wonderful she was til i left thank God. I was there may22-29.I want go back just because of the shadiness of the first lady. This was my first time in Portland JA. Be on ur a game.
