If you long to explore New Zealand’s beautiful Bay of Islands, Paihia makes a wonderful base. Known as “the Jewel of the Bay Islands,” this seaside town has golden beaches, lovely coastal walking trails and waterfalls, and a colorful population of local birds. Paihia also holds an important role in the country’s history. It was here, after a century of conflict between indigenous Maori tribes and Western settlers, that peace was finally made and the groundbreaking Treaty of Waitangi was signed.

Thanks so much Peter and Katalina for a fabulous stay at Tarltons Lodge over looking the sunny Bay of Islands. We had a fantastic time staying in our King bed suite with a private alfresco dining area and private spa. We loved how well appointed the room was and the complimentary drinks and cookies. The room is very well dressed and very clean. We were even able to have a private masseuse come to our room for a couple massage whom we highly recommend and Peter and Katalina can give you her details. The private spa and views from the alfresco dining area are divine. And getting up to watch the sunrise and have an early morning spa is well worth it! Our stay was worth every dollar! Peter and Katalina offer the best kept secret for a luxury stay in Paihia.

The room was lovely, nice decor, very roomy, comfy bed, with a great deck and views. the beach a short talk down the hill and track had lovely golden sand and very private. We walked along the beach every day and night, and it was an easy walk. If you missed the tide it was a hike up the hill!!

They cancelled our booking last minute, the lady was very rude and unhelpful. The place did not compare to the pictures online. Rundown and unkept. Lucky escape for us. After talking to locals they also confirmed that it was not a good place to stay. Many people have had run ins with the owner.

Bay of Islands Holiday Park is a 4.2 hectare Holiday Park providing Paihia accommodation and is well located for exploring the Bay of Islands. Plenty of trees for shade and the Waitangi River running along one boundary for safe swimming and kayaking up to the Lilypond Falls. Listen to the peace and quite of nature as you gently paddle upstream to a tarzan swing and waterfalls and great swimming hole. The park is well located for exploring the best that the Bay of Islands has on offer. Centrally located 10 minutes drive from both Paihia and Kerikeri, you can enjoy the best of both worlds. We offer a free tour booking service. Tours that pick-up from the park include: Cruise the Bay of Islands, Swim with the Dolphins, charter a yacht, day trips to Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach.
This park had friendly staff, but was EXTREMELY BUSY they literally packed in tents on top if each other which didnt look good, I was lucky to have a self contained campervan so parked up in my spot OK. I had concerns over cleanliness of the toilets, showers, kitchen and wash basins. All dirty, floors dirty. Showers were mouldy and smelt of mould. NOT HOT SHOWERS. ALL THE WATER IS DISCOLOURED A LIGHT BROWN. Therefore even though they said fine to drink, i did not drink the water. This camp felt like it could definitely do with a deep clean and make over. I was glad to leave the facilities behind me. Even though this place is cheap I have stayed in much nicer cheap options and wish i had just stayed at a DOC site than here so think twice before booking long term stays. Also midges/mosquitos if no breeze as close to river.
