We stayed here for one night on our first trip back to Japan in three years. This inn is doing a great job, particularly considering the rate, which includes two meals. Each room has its own outdoor tub, which is pretty sizeable for an in-room tub. The meals reflected a lot of effort and creativity by the chef, who focuses on local ingredients including a tempura of local greens that he foraged himself. They were filling, but not too much. This inn continues to be particularly careful in covid times, so the service was simple (though sincere). Once they show you to your room, you are left to your own devices, and meals are taken in private rooms in the dining area. There is some rigidity. For example, they seat everyone for dinner at 6pm and breakfast at 8am. You are not given a choice. But overall, I think you get a lot of bang for your buck here in a beautiful part of the country. Highly recommended.

KAI is a leading brand of upscale boutique hot spring ryokans. Every establishment offers a contemporary take on the traditional Japanese inn, providing unique, location-specific experiences. From exclusive activities to specialty suites, KAI is an invitation to immerse yourself in the rich diversity of Japanese culture. KAI Aso is located on the southern island of Kyushu, surrounded by lush mountains of a national park. The mineral-rich hot springs of Mt. Aso, a caldera volcano, fill the outdoor tubs that grace every secluded villa. After you soak, take in panoramic views of the magnificent five peaks while savoring the local Kyushu cuisine.
This was a place with around 12 cottages that u enter and u will be wowed by the interior furnishing with a jacuzzi and the onsen outside. At night the fire is lighted to provide you some warmth. However, we have no idea why it will automatically off the heated floor at night. Hence it was a bit cold. When we first enter the resort, the service felt a bit cold incomparison to other ryokans we have been to ! My trip favorite currently is onyado chikunrintei in saga. The lady serving us was so sweet and takes care of my baby ! The food was not as good as I expected. It was good but not excellent. So far, ryokans such as chikunrintei and hoshinoya yufuin provided better food quality. Places nearby are nabegataki falls, kuju park and takachiho gorge! Beautiful sights at nabegataki and takachiho. The flowers in kuju park had not opened yet so probably it is better worth a visit after April. Overall a very good experience, I like the lounge area and the short introduction at bar caldera on the area around mount Aso.

As the other comments, this is a boutique hotel which is just a few kilometres from the ski resort! There are only 8 rooms, individual house. We have a private hot spring in the our indoor little courtyard. It's so good especially after playing for 4 hours ski! What a relax! We have japanese sliced beef for sabu-sabu, fried stream fish with sake for our dinner! It's delicious. After this yummy, we all have a good sleep in this cozy room!

Not a luxury place as expected when we booked. Staff were very helpful and food was above our expectation (a lot to eat). Beddings were very comfortable. Room was a bit wear out. The best was the public onsen, one super big indoor and one outdoor on the second level. There was a water jet shower next to the onsen. Beware the private family onsen is not free. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
