Most people come to Hualien to visit the Taroko Gorge. And with good reason—it's simply beautiful. With rope bridges over rivers, hiking trails with astounding views, and temples cut into the mountainsides, it's an unforgettable place. Feel the full power of the ocean at Shihtiping, a two-hour drive from Hualien, where the waves crash into the rocky shore.

Recommended for a Cycling trip or picnic during cold season for its beautiful beach formed by stones. You may also enjoy the gorgeous view of Hualien mountains a far or sunset and stars at night. For transport, it’s recommended to rent a motorbike or car (reasonable and affordable) beside Hualien Train station.

The B&B is a pleasant and quiet place to stay. It is about 25mins drive away from Hualien City. My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights. The plan was to explore Taroko Gorge but the host (whom we address as Mama) recommended to explore some other areas such as Shitiping, Qinxintan beach and Dongdamen Night Market. I think Mama understood my wife and I well. The places that she recommended was very laid back and fuss free. I enjoyed the journey to and the destinations that she suggested. Mama really took good care of us. She arranged our taxi rides, a guide to Taroko (Mr Huang) and even brought us to a very discreet dinner place near by which served the most delicious grill fish we ever had. We only knew a little chinese so there a lot of Google translating and guessing. But lovely Mama was very patient with us. Wati, her Indonesian helper was a blessing to us as we communicate in bahasa. She even made for us Indo me for breakfast. Our hotel room was on the second floor. Clean and spacious, it look like it could accommodate a family of 3 or 4. There was no wardrobe to keep our clothes in but that did not bother much. The roof top is an awesome to watch the sun rise and the waves. Overall 5 stars. There are other places around the area that we can stay at but we would be more than happy to comeback to Ocean B&B to see Mama again :)

Nowhere to go, sitting in the corridor, so that the mountains and clouds accompany your reading, and you can watch the starry fully experience at night easily.
Stayed 2 nights here with 2 children (4 year old girl and 5 year old boy) and they are so happy! Stayed in the Peter Rabbit themed room with slide.... the kids had whale of a time playing in the room while the adults unpack and rest! Owner is very responsive and was keeping in touch just before we arrived at Hualien. Breakfast was home-made and prepared thoughtfully. The dog is friendly and so obedient. We really enjoy our stay here and will definitely be back again!

This cosy little homestay is one of the relatively newer accommodations in Hualien. It is situated on a quiet road right next to the Pacific Ocean that is quickly becoming populated with other homestays. Although called a homestay, it is actually a small corner building that is more akin to a guesthouse that you find in Southeast Asia. There are family and double rooms, with the east-facing double rooms being the real highlight of the place as they all have their own balconies that face the ocean. You can literally watch the sunrise from your bed through the balcony sliding glass doors. All the standard room amenities are taken care of and the room is simply and adequately furnished and clean. All the toiletries were provided in the form of two toiletry care packs that interestingly also contained disposable hand and bath towels. Although they're not the usual cloth towels you expect, they do their job well enough. House slippers are provided when you enter the homestay on the ground floor where you can leave your shoes in a cabinet. Hot and cool water is available in the living room with tea and coffee and cups available for use any time of the day. The Wi-Fi works well too. You're provided with the key to your room, and probably because we were the only guests there, we got the key to the main door as well so that we could lock up or get in any time we wished. Breakfast is provided in the form of a meal voucher that you use to buy food from a breakfast shop just a few minutes down the road. If you order over the value of the voucher, you just top up with cash. If you like your breakfasts in your hotel, this might be a bother but nothing really beats going to the local breakfast shop and ordering your first hot meal of the day together with the locals. White Sand Homestay is run by a young couple Jacob and Heidi. We didn't get to meet Heidi but Jacob exemplified Taiwanese hospitality in every possible way. He picked us up at Hualien Train Station in the morning and brought us to the homestay, introducing and recommending sights and eats to us along the way. And once we got to the homestay, he sat with us to show us even more sights and eats on a map, and let us know about the different tours available that he could book for us if we were keen. We were even provided with two really good and light bicycles for use free of charge. Knowing that we were checking out and intending to spend the whole of the next day at Taroko Gorge, Jacob really went beyond what we expected and not just allowed us to leave our heavy bags in the homestay when we checked out, he even brought our bags down to be deposited at the bus station so that we could collect them when we returned to the station after our day at Taroko Gorge! White Sand Homestay may not qualify as five-star holiday accommodation anytime soon, but Jacob's friendliness and hospitality is top class.

Ms Ng is a super host who goes the extra mile to made her guests feel at home. She responded to my enquires very quickly. The room is clean and comfortable. About 10 mins walking distance from Ruisui train station. There is washing machine for guests who need to do laundry. Would stay at this B&B again if I am in Ruisui.

We stayed in two B&Bs in Hualien, and I would highly recommend Gan Cheng. Location-wise, it's not really in the city, but not far from it. I rented a car and it took 15 minutes to get from the train station to the place. If you're not driving, you should call ahead to figure out how to get there, though I'm sure cabs know this place. Once you figure the transport part out, everything else is great. The vicinity is quiet, green & scenic, and is great to explore on a bicycle (which the owner lends for free). Try to stay in one of the wooden huts if you can (there are also rooms within the main house). I got one of them, and it was lovely. The furniture and decor inside have been chosen by the owner, and you can feel that personal touch. When we were there, another group had a BBQ in the large yard outside, and I could tell it was great fun. A big plus is chatting with the owner … while she can be busy getting things done around the house, if you get the chance to speak with her, she's happy to share great tips on things to do and places to eat. In fact, we ended up going to the Taroko Music Festival with her and her family! Oh, and if you like cats, they have 4 in the house … guests are also welcome to bring pets. All-in-all, this B&B feels like one (as opposed to the other I stayed at, which was also nice, but felt more hotel-like) because of the owner's hospitality, and decor that felt personalized. I'll stay here again if I go back to Hualien.
