This "onsen" was one of my bucket list long time. There is located in the deep of the mountains, near the prefectural border of Gunma and Niigata. I drove a car from Echigo-Yuzawa in Niigata pref. After passing the border, you will find a junction which is connected with the destination. 10 minutes later, I could see an anciant ryokan, "Choju-kan" in the end of the road. The "Choju-kan" has been established in Meiji-era, more than 100 years ago. The famous Literary giants were staying there for their writeing work. There are 3 onsen in the "Choju-kan". Oldest one is an old fashion, "konyoku", mixed bathing style. These onsen are also served to the "one day guest" but the timing is only limited the mixed style. However for the staying guest is able to use for limited time for 2 hours female only timing in the night time. Another onsen are switching between male and female depends on the timing. Some of room is not equiped the private rest room however all the guest can enjoy and feel the anciant atmosphie of Japan. I strongly recommend this "Choju-kan"!

Lovely traditional hotel with great old world charm. The onsens in the hotel are definitely a plus as you can retire to your room after a session without having to endure the external elements particularly when it is snowing. Very responsive staff. As others have mentioned, the building is mainly of light structure and as such you can hear sounds from rooms around / above you. How loud it gets is luck of the draw with the other guests staying at the hotel at the same time. For us it was generally ok and the hotel experience outweighed this negative

We did not stay at Manza Prince , but the sister hotel. The best part of the Prince Manza Hotel was the onsen. You get high sulphuric water with a breathtaking view of the mountain in Manza Onsen region. Best visit during winter. The experience was sublime!

The staff here were courteous and nice, and the place itself was well kept and really good! Unfortunately the dinner we had was not as good as what we came to expect from other ryokans. It wasn't bad, just not as good as we expected. The onsens were great, and the experience of having a private open air onsen in the snow is an unforgettable experience.

I was taken here by two Japanese friends who drove me up through the nearly impenetrable mist. Incredible scenery when you could see. The building was huge and probably hasn't changed a bit since 1974. Our room was very basic but warm and cosy. The baths are incredible. The milky water does feel wonderful on your skin and all the baths are I need wonderful wooden buildings with great views. The buffet hall felt like school camp with much better food and what an eye opener it was seeing the bus loads of senior citizens and office workers getting stuck into their niku jaga. There are many foreign staff so you should be able to cope without Japanese. You should give it a try as this is so outside the regular tourist experience. Having a morning outside bath overlooking the mountains is something you'll never forget.

First of all I must say, the location/onsen itself is amazing. Quite possibly one of the best in Japan, breathtaking views and also tattoo friendly. The food that was served to us on the other hand was a different story. Dinner was presented to us as a kaiseki meal, but instead of having everything coursed out like a normal kaiseki meal, it was all just strewn out on the table. Most of the food was clearly just frozen food thawed out and presented to us. Sashimi clearly smelled fouled, completely cold grilled fish, and duck meat that was chewy and tough like old boots. We decided to leave before the “Gohan” course of the meal which was the only thing coursed to us at the end of the meal. Our server asked us why we were leaving so soon as to which we told her that the meal was basically inedible. She responded with “I’m sorry” instead of trying to elevate the situation and give us something a bit more satisfactory, almost as if this is a commonality for her. With my 20+ years in the hospitality business I would be the first to tell you that you never apologize for anything because it’s clearly admitting that your food/service is sub pay at best. Later in the evening I spoke to some Thai tourists (I lived in Thailand for 2 years) asking them what they though of the food, and without any sort of hesitation told me they thought it was terrible. My wife, who is Japanese also spoke to some Japanese tourists that also said similar things but were a bit more reserved due to the culture nuances of Japanese people in general. The following day we made a complaint to the manager at the front desk about our experience and basically told us the same thing that our server the previous night told us “I’m sorry” and even went as far as telling us that other people have complained in the past and that “he would inform the kitchen of this matter. No comps for anything, no “we’ll make a better experience for you the next time on us” just “sorry” and basically shrugged his shoulders. Despite the amazing location or not, my wife and I spent lots of money and our valuable time to visit this place expecting an incredible experience. Needless to say it’s highly doubtful we would ever come back unless it’s complimentary on the house. Bring your own food, or go to another onsen

It wasn't too difficult catching a local bus from Nakanojo to Shima Onsen Yamaguchi bus stop where the Onsen is located, next to a small gorge. It is up in the mountains, where we get crisp clean air and green scenery for our walks. Our room faced the swift running stream and was large, clean and comfortable. The onsens, indoor and outdoor, were very large and well appointed, facing the gorge. Kaiseki dinner as well as breakfast were served in the restaurant. If we came this way again we would stay here.

Our pride is huge amount of onsen that is springing up 1600 liter per minute from 7spots. You can taste different seasonal ingredients at Kaiseki cuisine in every month. we offer you relaxing and soothing time in spacious guest room with large windows.
This onsen hotel is a bit dated and there is no wifi in the building where we stayed. Amenities in room or onsen are limited and some onsen does not have shower facility. Visited one of the outdoor lady onsen which has a good view of waterfall. Dinner is served at private dining room instead of at the guest room like other onsen resorts. The Japanese course dinner was good while buffet breakfast was rather basic but still feed you full. Hotel staff are polite and attentive. There is a lady at front desk who can speak good English. As it was raining, they were very kind to send us to their sister hotel Shima Grand Hotel for our bus back to Tokyo.
