Lying at the very top of Europe, Finnmark is the northernmost part of Norway that reaches around Sweden and meets Finland. This is the heart of Norwegian Lapland, where Karasjok is the cultural and political seat of Sami life. Though Norway's biggest county by size, Finnmark has the fewest people. Alta, the biggest city with just 17,000, is called the Town of Northern Lights for its great views of the phenomenon. Alta Museum is largely devoted to local rock carvings from thousands of years ago.

Situated in the heart of the arctic, the mountain lodge exhibits a deep-rooted connection to Norwegian farming and cabin culture. On average, Norwegians spend 60 days a year in cabins. This is a part of their cultural heritage. In earlier times the farmers brought their livestock into the mountains on pasture during the summer, and while herding the cows and sheep they lived in small cabins. At the mountain lodge they lived by the food they made, the berries they gathered, and whatever the nature offered them. At Bjørnfjell Mountain Lodge we want to give you the opportunity to take part in this Norwegian cabin culture. Stay comfortable inside our cozy cabins or in a room in the main lodge while enjoying the surrounding nature.
Great location. Lovely cabin, cosy fireplace, good space and comfortable beds. Also has outdoor seating. Meals can be served in the restaurant or the cabin. We had ours in the cabin and it was so nice and relaxed for the family. Staff were very friendly and gave excellent service. We did sledging and had did the bonfire night experience. Both excellent. Was wishing we had skied too as the slope was right next to the cabin. Saw the northern lights. Cute sheep to feed and pet.

For you english speaking people, try the raindeer beef or chicken salat. For dessert The Nemesis or chocolate fondant

Vadso Fjordhotell. This cosy hotel lies in idyllic surroundings on an island in Vadso. Vadsoyaculture park is our nearest neighbour and there are wonderful views of the sea and the town centre from the hotel. A fantastic starting point for birdwatching or simply for a morning stroll on historic land. The price of the room includes breakfast. The hotel was renovated most recently in 2013. 23 rooms, conference room, function rooms, bar, separate barbecue cabin and good parking.
Rooms are quite small and basic equipped, no fridge. Bathroom is tiny. TV is based on Google Chromecast connected to your laptop or smartphone. Ok sleeping quality as long as your neighbours are the quite type. If not you will hear them snore. Breakfast is basic. Staff is friendly and helpful.

Canyon Hotell operates as a smart hotel. That means you can easily check in with your phone, without waiting for the reception to check you in. We have our own tour company Nord Ekspedisjon inside the hotel reception. From here you can book tours, rent arctic clothing or bikes and more.

A last minute stay (we were travelling from Pasvik to Batsfjord and were concerned that this would be too far to go on a Sunday (especially as there was column driving up over the mountain pass), so decided to stop for the night at Mix Tigern Kiosk. A very welcome break in a lovely hotel. We ate in the cafe beneath the hotel (and checked in there too). The staff were really friendly (so much that we stopped for a snack and a chat on the way back a week later). Parking is right outside. The accommodation was spotless and really well appointed. There is a communal kitchen with fridge, cooker, kettle, sink, cutlery, crockery etc. A lovely lounge and dining area, a communal bathroom with lovely hot free shower. The room was a twin room, with a view of the bridge (well recommended), and lovely fluffy dressing gowns which were a nice touch. Completely recommend.

Birk Husky is a place that everyone needs to see and experience. I am recommending this place to everyone I know! The staff is friendly, considerate, helpful and easy to talk to. The accomadation lies beautifully located along the Russian river-border with great views and possibility for a swim/dip in the river in between rounds in the sauna. The dog sled tours is the main highlight and is like an experience you've never had before. The noise from the very friendly dogs, eager to go out running, suddenly dissapearing as you release the breaks on the sled. And then you travel out into the winter wonderland that is Pasvik. If you are lucky enough you can watch the northern lights while you ride the dog sled through the snow covered forests. The food is also very good, especially the King crab soup? If you're considering which place to choose for an experience like this, I'd recommend you go for Birk Husky?

Disclaimer: we did not actually sleep at the hotel, because the road to reach Honningsvag was closed due to a snow storm. We did not think about checking the road conditions before booking our non-refundable room, but we received a kind message from the hotel in the morning of our arrival to inform us that the road was closed :-( We then drove as far as we could and waited to see if the road would be opened that day. After several hours waiting we've been informed that the road would not be opened before the next day - it was around 9pm and we did not have any other option booked... but that's another story ;-) While we were waiting, we kept in touch with the friendly staff of the hotel, and got to be reimbursed for the night we've not been able to stay there - even if it was a non-refundable fare. We will definitely stay there the next time we try to reach the Cape North!
