The Mount View Hakone is a ryokan that may not be very new and has slightly come of age, but manges to convince on other fields of expertise. We loved the privately bookable onsen and were particularly fond of the dinner experience that was lavish, fresh and memorable - a true highlight of every night. It was a relaxing stop: long walks, good food, no TV or other entertainment, making it the perfect getaway spot close to busy Tokyo.

The Hakone Suishoen is a hot spring inn, which combines traditions and modernity, housing the former Mitsui Family's resort villa—a tangible cultural property with over 94 years of history—in the garden. All guestrooms are built as suite rooms, equipped with open-air hot spring bath, the renovated Tangible Cultural Property. They can choose either Kaiseki or Teppanyaki for dinner.
We decided to tack on a stay in Hakone on our way to Izu (for 2 nights), and since it was a last minute booking we were unable to secure a room at more renowned properties such as Hakone Ginyu, Gora Kadan or Gora Hanaougi. Our expectation was that Suishoen would be a good stay but the overall experience would be a notch below some of the best ryokans we've tried. We were definitely proven wrong! From the service, architecture, rooms and (especially) the food, everything was top notch and was right up there with our two Izu choices (Asaba and Arcana.) We generally try to get the best room possible, and in Suishoen's case, it was the Luxury Suite "Negau," which is a spacious 123m² in size and had all of the trimmings that one would expect from a top-category room. Negau's interior could best be described as "Wa-modern" (Japanese modern) - very contemporary, but not in a way that is cold. Rather, it gives a slight country vibe while still being up-to-date, aesthetically. While the use of dark wood isn't to our personal liking (we like it more bright and airy), Negau was comfortable and tastefully furnished, and was in tip-top shape. It had a spacious living room, a dining table, a Japanese "tea room" (a tatami sitting area), a separate bedroom and, of course, a very nice rotenburo (Open-air onsen hot springs bath.) While the grounds and garden are not as expansive or awe-inspiring as some other ryokans we've stayed at, the main restaurant building is impressive and historic. Built during the Taisho Era (early 20th Century), it was formerly the Summer residence of the Mitsui family, and has been carefully restored to its original grandeur. It really gives Suishoen a great sense of place, and gives an indication of the incredible meals that we were to enjoy that evening. The food was stupendous - it's really up there with the very best. Everything was unique, creative and varied. Even something as simple as a grilled chicken (which was a substitute for the amazing beef, which Mrs. KI-NRT cannot eat) was cooked and flavored to perfection. Dessert was also a delight - it consisted of a soup made of chilled sweet white bean paste which was accompanied by Kiwi Ice Cream, Strawberries from Amaou, Kiyomi Mikan (a type of Japanese citrus fruit) and Warabi Mochi, a Jelly-like confection made from bracken starch and covered or dipped in kinako (sweet toasted soybean flour.) It was a very pretty serving, and each item contained in the dish meshed beautifully with one another. We love Japanese breakfasts, even though it's generally more of an afterthought at ryokans relative to the dinners that are offered. In this aspect Suishoen definitely did not mail it in. It was far more creative and varied than the standard "Wachoshoku" that contains a grilled fish, miso soup, pickled vegetables, some tofu and white rice. The grilled vegetables, the savory flan, the various condiments and even the fish itself was as impressive as what was offered at dinner. Kudos to the chef and kitchen staff for providing a tasty culinary experience, end-to-end. The staff were a delight - they were warm, prompt in fulfilling requests and overall very eager to please. You can tell that Suishoen is gunning for top-dog status and they won't rest on their laurels until they get there. In spite of the quality of competition in Hakone, we will definitely be making plans to return at some point in the near future.

Hakone Retreat Fore is excellent choice if you want to have quick retreat from the busy city life. Establishment is very nice with high quality onsens, beautiful restaurants and clean rooms. We read quite a many of previous reviews, and a lot has improved in the past months but of course there is still room to improve. Few major updates: - WiFi works everywhere - Paint in the rooms is OK, it suppose to look like that - Staff is super friendly and speaks as good English as you can expect - Food is good quality - Lounge has free coffee all the time and it's very good! Regarding the talks about prices, well, concidering the average prices around Hakone, Retreat Fore is on the average pricing.

I have been 3 times now. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. They set up our room nicely for our baby and provide everything needed - baby soap, diaper box, etc. Food is fantastic as well. Room is comfortable and onsen in the room is very relaxing (but scalding hot so add in cold water first!). I look forward to returning soon.

'ICHINOYU' was founded in 1630 as a pioneer of the hot spring hotel industry in Hakone area and even painted by the famous UKIYOE painter - Ando Hiroshige. Here in the traditional environment,You'll surely be satisfied with Japanese culture.
Stayed at this ryokan some months ago, this was our first experience staying in a ryokan. We had a room with a beautiful view of the valley and the onsen in our room was relaxing and wonderful. That being said, the room and the ryokan itself seemed a bit worn and tired. You also have to make your beds, which, as we would later learn, is uncommon for Japanese ryokan. During our first dinner at the hotel, we also had a poor experience with one of the servers when we tried to politely ask how to eat one of the dishes that was served. He harshly told us to just look at the menu (we had, and still had questions) and left. Overall, the onsens at this ryokan are great! A small renovation and some more courteous service could ensure that the other amenities are equally enjoyable.

At our hotel, we offer a traditional Japanese ryokan atmosphere for your enjoyment. We have 14 Japanese-style guest rooms with traditional architectural features including tatami mat floors, paper sliding doors, and ranma transom panels. Each room has a different design. We provide you authentic kaiseki ryori (Japanese multi-course cuisine), our in-room baths, and our open-air bath with a view of a garden overflowing with natural splendor, one that will allow you to experience the beauty of Japan’s four seasons. We invite you to enjoy a luxurious stay in an authentic Japanese space that is unlike anything you have experienced before.
My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Our villa was spacious and we appreciated the private onsen bath as well as the architecture. The common outdoor onsen was delightful. With advance notice they accommodated my vegetarian diet and everything was presented beautifully, both dinner and breakfast. The garden is lovely to stroll through. We found everything to be spotless. It’s location is excellent and close to the excellent outdoor Hakone sculpture museum!

Hakone Suimeisou - - took the 10am limited express car to hakone from Tokyo and arrive around 1:10h . Walked about 7 min to hotel - Hotel is located in the main strip where an arrow of the hotel is shown to go to the street behind - Walked in and were waved to sit in the waiting area by an older staff who was not too courteous - Checking is 2pm and checkin reception staff is somehow better than the 1st - the stay include breakfast in room - The day we went were rainy and snow drizzle - The room is Japanese tatami futon bedding arranged and breakfast is served 30 min after room is made - Room is spacious but dated, washroom reeks cigarette - A small toilet in the front anteroom, with dated and bare thread thin towel - Room overlooking a waterfall - 6 floor with open public hot spring - Bathroom and front anteroom reeks cigarette and complained but only with an apology and a staff with a bottle of deodorant spraying the area - Front counter did not offer to change room as he said they are fully booked - have sent somebody to deodorize the room again - Onsen was great with outdoor view, went there with no crowds yet so the experience was pleasant - Only downside is customers have to bring their own face and wash towels and back to room - As customers are expected to shower and wash after onsen, bathroom in room do not provide toiletries, they have to be requested from the front counter - supplies provided is less than desirable standard - Breakfast served in the room - Including fried mackerel , tofu, plum, hot miso soup rice, fruit and yogurt, seaweed all laid out properly for you after your bedding are cleared, it’s more then enough for an average person - in all, you pay for the location and probably the onsen and nothing else - would not recommend and will go return definitely

We stayed in the Annex part of the Ryokan and can hardly say enough good things about our experience. The room (101 in the Kansuiro Annex) was fantastic with a great layout and furniture. It felt like a great mix of Japanese and Scandinavian design. The rotemburo onsen baths were great with one overlooking the river. The staff were incredibly hospitable. BUT - the room we stayed in was just next to the road, which is a major thoroughfare and the traffic noise is a major detractor. I'd say that I would give the whole experience six stars and then have to take two away from the traffic noise. I am a light sleeper and was tossing and turning. My partner is a relatively deep sleeper but was also kept awake. On the whole, I probably would still recommend staying there, but try and see if you can stay in a room facing away from the road.
