The French are known as the world’s most romantic people, so it makes sense that Akaroa—site of New Zealand’s first French settlement—is an ideal spot to set the scene for love. Hold hands with your paramour and stroll along the provincial harbor, where dolphins, penguins, and seals bob and chatter in the sparkling ice-blue water. First-class accommodations, quaint French bakeries and succulent restaurants are the perfect ingredients for a romantic getaway.

The hosts are very knowledgeable on the area and places to see. The bed was comfy with quality linen. The breakfast was amazing with all needs catered for and more with delightful crockery and napkins. Easy walk to town shops eating places and the sea. Nice apartments in a great location to shops and the waterfront. Bathroom and bedrooms are on ground floor with steep staircase to main living area. Our family of 5 were disappointed to find that on arrival Management had given our 3 bedroom apartment to 2 people. We spent most of our evening rearranging bedding in the smaller apartment that was given to us and requesting essential items that hadn't been replaced. Management were dismissive and had told us we should have checked in earlier. If staying here would advise checking in advance that you have the accommodation you have booked and paid for, especially as they charge your credit card before arrival. There are many other great places to stay in Akaroa which we would rather stay at next time.

French Bay House is a beautiful historic villa in the heart of Akaroa with an iconic architectural style and a picturesque garden. The house is located on Rue Jolie close to Beach Road along which you will find a number of shops and restaurants overlooking the harbour. It is within easy walking distance to the wharf where you can catch a number of boats to see the dolphins and other wildlife which live in the harbour. This is the perfect spot for a relaxing stay!
Enter French Bay House through the colourful garden of dahlias and hollyhocks and into a world of aesthetic glory. From the golden botanical wallpaper to the stained glass and lead light windows - no matter where you looked, beauty surrounds. Beyond beauty however, Jacqui & Tim have created a space which felt both personal yet welcoming to others; their wedding photos on display and Chinese masks invite you into their world. I did not realise that hosting could be such an art until seeing Jacqui in action; she is a truly talented woman and her breakfasts are to die for. Thanks for making us feel so wonderfully welcome.

Wake up to expansive water views of beautiful Takamatua Bay, tranquil rolling hills, nature surrounds and charming gardens dotted with nut and fruit trees. Enjoy Jane's special welcome and hospitality and the pleasure of her delicious gourmet breakfast made from fresh produce mostly from L'Abri's own garden! Enjoy the modcons of the light-filled home and your beautifully appointed room and bathroom, or relax in the picturesque ambiance of the deck and let your cares drift away...
This was a three night birthday treat for an Auckland wife and Grandmother, her choice, and the accomodation immediately proved worthy of that decision. Our welcome and ongoing care from our host Jane made us feel truly comfortable, almost like being at home except we don't have a cat called Rosie or chickens to provide fresh eggs every day. L'Abris is a place to come back to, why chance the unknown.

We stayed for 2 nights and were made really welcome by Paul who was a most considerate and helpful host in every way. Our room was comfortable and well appointed and the property is within walking distance of the lovely little town of Akaroa, albeit up a steep hill. The views from the property are quite stunning! We had a look around the well designed garden which is stuffed full of interesting plants. Paul was a very interesting host and gave us advice on where to eat and where to visit on our short stay. Don't look any further for a short stay in Akaroa, you won't be disappointed.
