Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

I love lighthouses and the historic one here on the base is one of those, You will need to get inspected to go on the base so have all correct documents on you like proof of insurance, registration and driver's license.

We loved our one week beach rental at BEAUTY AND THE BEACH, 3241 Sandpiper Road, Sandbridge Beach, VA. This was literally a last minute rental with Siebert Realty b/c our original rental with Sandbridge Realty was full of mold and we REFUSED to stay there. Beauty and the Beach was lovely, apparently recently been renovated. The house has 3 levels, 5 bedrooms and 4 baths - lots of room for our family of 6, plus a very tame dog, to spread out (our adult children accompanied us). The house backs to the canal, so it's a couple of blocks from the beach, but that was ok for us. Plenty of driveway space for several cars, a deck on the front and back of the house, a well maintained backyard swimming pool, a small dock to the canal with an available kayak, and a firepit on the side of the house (we made s'mores one night which was fun). This was our first family vacation to Sandbridge and it was great - very quiet and not many people on the beach (we were there Aug 29-Sept 5, 2020). We've had family beach vacations for 30+ years with our kids, who all said this was their favorite beach rental yet. We would rent here again. And many thanks to Siebert Realty for helping us rent at the last minute :)

We visited from the Toms Cove Visitor Center, though the center was closed both times we came - it closes at 4pm. The sunset there is unforgettable. Very few people visiting, and the beach is very clean. Tons of gulls for birdwatching. And of course it's beautiful just gazing at the waves coming in, appreciating the sea foam and reflecting on the world.

Absolutely fantastic beach for families. Not touristy.... A lot of locals. Calm waves and gorgeous sunsets just over the bay bridge tunnel.

We've been to Cape Charles several times now and love this beach with young children because of the very gentle waves, plentiful soft sand, and very shallow waters for even the youngest toddlers to play in.

We have been here before and always have a good time. The beach itself is very clean and well maintained. There are life guards on duty as well as security patrols so it feels very safe and comfortable. The beach is wide and even though there are a lot of people it does not feel crowded. The sand is fine and the grandkids love digging and building sand castles. The surf is usually a good size for boogey boarding or you can fish from the pier for $10 all day. Great place for the family.

Excellent Small beach overlooking the York River !! There is a small community beach for fishing , walking, beaching, or just taking in the sights and sounds of the crashing beach. It is near the Coleman Bridge and there are shoppes to peruse and enjoy the local vibe.

This little play ground has beach related statues, slides and climbing stuff. They can pretend to ride a surf board and catch a big wave. Since it is located at the end of the boardwalk at Rudee Inlet you can watch surfers at one of the best places in Va Beach, watch the many small boats come and go thru the inlet. There is a nice walkway that goes under the nearby bridge which will lead you to the fishing center, where you can take a whale/dolphin trip, rent a jet ski, look at the boats and eat at a lot of great restaurants. If you stop by the fish cleaning station look down and you will see plenty of bait.

We stayed in the Croatan neighborhood for the week and the beach is beautiful - not crowded at all. There is a surfer area near the inlet, but the rest of the beach is for swimming/beach activities. Dogs are allowed before 10am and after 6pm. The ocean goes to about waist deep fairly quickly, but then is pretty flat for quite a ways out so it makes it easy to play in the waves. Would highly recommend!
