With its plentiful beaches, dramatic mountains, and backdrop of samba and bossa nova rhythms, it's easy to fall in love with Rio de Janeiro. Made famous in song, Ipanema Beach is still the place to stroll, sunbathe, and be seen. The largest Art Deco statue in the world, Christ the Redeemer, beckons visitors to Corcovado Mountain. Rio’s annual Carnaval celebrations are bacchanalian extravaganzas of feasting, music, dance, and costumed revelry.

The Shake Rio Speakeasy project started over two years ago with the opening of a secret bar running once a week among buildings and busy streets in the city center. The place has a different atmosphere from everything around it and is inspired by the american secret bars in the 20's. Behind the counter is the bartender Walter Garin, who is responsable for forming most of professionals bartenders working in clubs and bars in Rio nowadays. The mixologist with over 23 years of experience has more than 30 courses in different schools in the USA and Europe. The menu goes from classics to signature cocktails with different ingredients, offering special place to the brazilian cachaça. All the preparation for the drinks is handmade by his team at the bar with the production of bitters, vermute and soft drinks that are used on the cocktails.

Took the Metro but unfortunately the exit I needed was closed so ended up not quite where I'd plannned and as other reviewers have pointed out, it is NOT the place to wander round. However, just asked and got there. Had read the food wasn't brilliant so ate at a restaurant in the same street. Had no ID with me but fortunately, had spoken with some staff earlier and was cleared. Btw, security staff are everywhere, quite discreet but you know they are there! Watched the first band from the balcony and was asked to dance by a local gentleman so we danced right there...no probs with anyone as most folks are in an extremely happy mood. Went down to the dance floor as well and danced there too for both the 1st and 2nd bands. Did venture into the Disco but not for me....good music but volume wise, I value my ears! On leaving, handed in the card onto which your drinks/food bill is finalised and then asked if someone could escort me to the taxi rank...all completed very quickly. Security staff stayed with me until a taxi arrived and ensured the driver knew my destination. I'm a professional musician and also love my dancing. This venue set me up for the rest of my holiday. An excellent mix of young/middle aged and mature customers. Glad I went.

In the heart of Lapa, the Cultural Cafe Sacrilege is a completely different place. Reference by the wealth of information and a remarkable creativity. Identity is the joke of the 'sacred' with bohemian Rio. The result could only be an interactive and house full of stories to tell. The house has the astral da Lapa. Sacrilege is not to know!
