Hippo CO is a lodge-style joint with exposed brick, wood and taxidermy decor, for cocktails, whisky and live jazz.nWhere we create amazing cocktails, which has been at the heart of what we do for the past 15 years. Each season we deliver a fresh new cocktail menu, using the highest quality ingredients, for our guests to enjoy.
Hippo Co. is simply put the best bar in Canberra, with a great range of spirits and house cocktails delivered in a fantastic atmosphere (often complemented by live music). Hippo Co. simply delivers every single visit. I only wish that they were open later so that I could go more often.

During prohibition, an airline popped into existence offering flights to the Caribbean. Serving abundant cocktails in highball glasses, the flight became affectionately known as The Highball Express. Many ‘thirsty’ Americans jumped on board for a weekend away to sunny Cuba, where exotic rums, cocktails and punches awaited their arrival. Welcome to The Highball Express - Odgers Lane, Canberra City. Bookings available.
We booked in for the New Years Eve Party and it was exceptional! The cocktails are the best in Canberra! It’s such a beautiful venue it really looks and feels like a Caribbean rum bar. The staff are fun and knowledgeable. We’ve been here a couple of times now and I find the staff so friendly, talking you through the vast cocktail menu. Many were already dancing when the Brazilian style cabaret dancers came in ... they were amazing WOW from that moment on the dance floor was packed and the atmosphere electric! Great music, great dancing, great fun ... the best New Years Eve party in Australia! Thanks to all the wonderful staff, bartenders and amazing dancers for a wonderful evening... it could not have been better! Happy New Year!

Located in Canberra’s cultural precinct. Find us in the basement nestled between Peppers gallery, Ovolo and QT Hotel. We offer a neighbourhood vibe to the area with a warming atmosphere, rockabilly and a food/drink menu to match. Catering to the residents, hotel guests, after work crowd and pre/post diners of the surrounding restaurants. Find beers on tap, a focus on local wines, select spirits and ‘comfort cocktails’. Your new local, BM.

Boasting two stages and huge & varied acts every week, the basement is set to rock your next gig or function! The Basement is fitted with state of the art PA equipment, ensuring exceptional sound quality and clarity, with superior room acoustics. Global acts refer to the Basement as one of the best venues to perform! It’ll rock your socks but your ears won’t bleed!! The Basement also has four
The Basement has a storied past leading back to the days of the Town Centre Tavern & Pete’s Bar & Grill. A good mid sized room, a mostly underground aspect up the top of a commercial area in Belconnen. . The venue has weathered a particularly challenging period for live music - especially heavy music which in the 1990s flourished in the city as evidenced by Canberra being the home to the longest running and most storied domestic heavy metal festival, Metal for the Brain. For a good ten years around 2005 onward Canberra was visited less frequently by promoters of international heavy tours. They used to be next to the X&Y Dumpling house, but such the last 10 years has seen change and investment by the Basements’ brains trust to have knocked down the wall and assimilated the dumpling house into another bar, and more pool table space The investment in two full new PA systems in the larger 900 capacity and the smaller 120 capacity space has allowed both the local scene to flourish & slowly increased the confidence for international promotions to exponentially increase their visits to the nations capital. Pool tables and a battery of pinball machines keep enthusiasts of these pastimes coming to the venue irrespective of the music on the menu and speaking of menu, Chompy’s has bought a good selection of tasty bar food and snacks avaialable. It’s a testament to that 90s metal spirit being carried on in the face of adversity that the venue has grown and flourished. Give it a go when you need your eardrums cleaned out.
