Managed to get a table in the very popular gastro-pub on a Sunday evening. The food was excellent, the service attentive and friendly and the ale well kept and refreshing. Almost five stars ..... but not quite. The duck dish I had was well cooked and I enjoyed it though in hindsight perhaps I should have had a side dish of something green..... actually great place to eat.... if in Tavistock book in advance!

Lunch with friends. Very long wait for our food. Two meals we ordered were not available. The menu had a very small choice. My meal was not available so I asked for an omelette. They couldn’t provide this as they did not have a frying pan. An amazing excuse.I ended up with fish which was OK. The peas were hard. The pie of the day was an amount of meat and a slice of pastry. Not a pie at all. Never again.Dear Rita,Thank-you for taking the time to review your experience with us. You did send me a private message which I replied to but you haven't contacted me again. I have spoken to my team to ascertain what went wrong during your visit. I understand you ordered 4 gammon but regrettably we were awaiting our delivery so could only fulfil 2 of the 4 ordered. Unfortunately our menu which offers 7 starters, 11 main courses plus 3/4 specials on the blackboard, a choice of 4 Baguettes, 4 Ploughmans and 3 Bar plates didn't offer enough options for you. (All dishes were available with the exception of the gammon). You asked for an omelette which we don't have on our menu. We do not have a specific omelette pan so we said we couldn't offer this. The pie of the day was chicken, ham leek and mushroom which was topped with filo pastry, as described on the blackboard. We do regularly serve traditional shortcrust pastry pies, but as it is a pie of the day we do vary them. As all our food is freshly cooked to order there can occasionally be a wait for food. I am sorry what you did have was not up to our usual high standard. As you can see from other reviews this is not our usual customer feedback.

The great thing about Trip Advisor is that it provides a platform for people to express their experiences in a strictly subjective fashion. So, although we visited this pub/eatery, we neither had a drink nor a meal. And here follows the reason why. We went in on a cold miserable day with the intention of having lunch. Inside proved worse than outside as not only was then interior cold and miserable but the welcome was as well. This gave a whole new meaning to the word, dank. We quote the greeting verbatim. Hi, we don't have any lamb or mussels. Silence. In one corner a staff member was sitting at a table dealing with a rep. She summonsed a man who could easily have been the owner who, without a greeting or a smile, walked past us and proceeded to discuss something with the rep. My wife gave me that,' not eating here' look and out we went to search for better. Now, possibly this is a fabulous eatery that serves excellent ales but alas we never found out simply because our experience was unpleasant. My final comment is simply common sense. You would have to be blind, stupid or a combination of both, not to know that the pub trade is falling apart and crumbling at the seams. On every corner and at every turn you can see the ghostly, boarded up remains of a once thriving pub. So how come a landlord allows his pub to be cold and unwelcoming? Beats me. Give it a try for yourself , we may be just unlucky.

the burrator inn is truly a Jekyll and Hyde. a traditional pub with accomodation is possibly the best description. many good points. Staff attentive and polite. rooms functional and comfortable i had a twin room which was more than adequate with a really nice bathroom and very good shower although the tv remote didn't work (room 6) and the kettle lid fell off during pouring. I'm fact my colleagues kettle burst into flames so these need looking at. breakfast was nice and freshly cooked.minus points. the whole building looks tatty from the outside. the unmade car park general untidiness of the grounds and dirty Windows don't give a good impression. the wi fi was useless and in these days that can be a big thing.overall the Inn was very good value for money and if working in the area i would not discount it but it could be a LOT better with some attention to the general upkeep.Ouch !!! That hurt.....The positives of your review are gratefully received, the negatives duly noted. Firstly, we have checked the TV remote in ALL rooms to find each one working perfectly. Further to this I will not comment except to add that your remarks tend to indicate a 'devil may care attitude' which is certainly not the case. Just more ammunition to strengthen my belief that perhaps it is time to retire from this ever increasingly difficult, demanding and thankless vocation

Food wise mid-range prices and the portion sizes would easily feed two people so we never had enough room for desert (Though I did go in one afternoon for the spotted Richard). If you want to save some money just share single portions nobody will go home hungry.Love to go back and visit this friendly pub.
