Dined here in the private room with a group of friends. First the positives. Both the private and public facilities were charming. The young staff were friendly and efficient. The house wine from good producers was fine. But here the positives end. The food which we had preordered was very poor. The âwild mushroomsâ had been shredded beyond recognition, my veal escalope was very tough and I had enough beans to feed a family of four. It was all lukewarm at best. My wife had terrine which she described as dense and tasteless. It was accompanied by enough bread to feed the table. Her main course of sea bass was better but again accompanied by too many vegetables. My neighbour had cod goujons which looked like enormous fish fingers rather than the individual bite size portions one would expect. I could go on. A lot of the food went back to the kitchen. This place, a nice pub, in a nice town with good young staff needs to sort out the kitchen. Less quantity and more quality please. Thanks for your feedback, I'm pleased there were aspects of your visit you enjoyed. However it seems our style of food - straightforward pub food - doesn't meet with your approval. I'm sorry to hear that. It's a difficult balance to strike - take the bread with the terrine, for example. When we serve the terrine we are often asked by customers for more bread, yet you found there to be too much. You found the cod goujons to be too big - and yet other customers have asked for this specific product to be reinstated when it was removed from the menu back in the summer. I appreciate you have a personal way that you like things to be done, but we have to provide a balanced menu that suits the majority of our customers. That way, we please most of the people, most of the time. I am truly sorry you didn't enjoy your visit, and I will of course pass on your feedback to the kitchen.

A charming and cosy English pub, The Running Horse is nestled in the village of Littleton just outside the historic city of Winchester. Its idyllic countryside setting makes it a destination of choice for fans of country leisure pursuits and touring group
Me and my girlfriend stayed at the hotel and ate in the restaurant.we had the seafood sharing platter to start and it was fresh, tasty and the mackerel pate was amazing. For mains we both had lamb and it was up there with the best lamb iv ever had and I love lamb,we did ask for mash instead of the new potatoes which they did for us without any comments made. Our waitress jade was polite and helpful,I really like the way she past on our compliments about the food back to the kitchen after each course.I was shocked at some of the reviews below as we couldnât fault any of the food or the staff.would definitely recommend both restaurant and hotel.Dear chrismahp,We very much appreciate your kind words and taking the time in letting us know about your recent stay with us at The Running Horse. I have passed your lovely feedback onto the kitchen and our front of house team member, Jade, who are all very delighted about your comments. We hope you welcome you both back again in the near future. Pre booked table for 13:30 as had guests, which actually was unnecessary as pub not busy. The waitress took our order promptly, but it took 3/4 hour for food to arrive. No complaints about the quality of the food, although the so called triple cooked chips were not to our mind what we expected. We then ordered dessert and once again had to wait ages to the point where we almost cancelled the order. One of our party order the mini dessert and coffee. The coffee arrived 15 minutes before the dessert! Not the smooth service we had hoped. Thanks for taking the time to let us know how we did.Glad you enjoyed the food Sorry it took a while Hope to see you soon

Booked in for Sunday lunch for group of 14, after a trip to The Bombay Sapphire Distillery Tour. Was seated in an upstairs room, which accommodated us very well! Had pre ordered as big group so just drinks order needed. Very nice server looked after us (did not get his name, but very tall had to dodge lights strung on ceiling) accommodating our sense of humour when one of the groups beer was a little delayed! Excellent food was received by everyone in the party no one had any complaints, Would definitely visit here again if in the area. Thanks so much! We're all very happy you had a great lunch with us.We look forwards to welcoming you again soonTake careDanni

Went with friends on a Tuesday lunchtime and ordered the fish and chips. What I got was a over cooked shell of batter with little to no fish inside (I have to wonder if the fish fell out of the batter in the fryer!). Shame as it is a lovely setting!Hiyou messaged me privately about this and I responded. Its unlikely the fish fell out of the batter. I have asked everyone involved in Tuesday's service. You didn't complain at the time even after we had checked on you, always happy to replace/reimburse. Not sure what to do now ? Let's hope you return and we can try againJulian

Having booked three nights in Winchester I started researching the pubs and I came upon the website for the Black Boy Inn. On the Friday on arrival in Winchester I had to locate it. From the Bishop On The Bridge pub one needs to take the footpath along the River Itchen until the footpath turns left over the river, a few yards/metres up Wharf Hill is the pub. The pub is full of interesting things. Some people might be put off by the examples of taxidermy but there are many other interesting items. When I visited with my wife there was a good selection of local real ales, all new to me. Two, Saxon Bronze & Purple Reign brewed in Winchester. Friday lunchtime was not too busy and so we were able to sit in comfy leather arm chairs, not that I sat down much as I walked around taking in all the fascinating exhibits. On Sunday while my wife shopped I returned for a pint. Although I didnât eat, the roasts being served looked and smelt very good. If you are in Winchester try the Black Boy Inn for the experience.

A real coal fire welcomed us upon arrival for dinner last evening and we received an added welcome from the friendly barman. Having heard the Golden Lion was under new ownership we were completely open minded on our expectations. My husband and I shared an ample plate of nachos to start, followed by the Pan Fried Halloumi Burger for myself and the Handmade Beef Burger for my husband. Our food was excellent in both quality and quantity and served with a smile. My husband enjoyed a pint of Horizon beer and I sampled a couple of the quality white wines available. As a local couple and having enjoyed our evening we will definitely be back. Just an added note, it was good to see that well behaved dogs are made most welcome.Thank you so much for your comments, we look forward to welcoming you back again soon.Best wishesScott and Debbie

Visited for Sunday lunch on a busy September afternoon. Agree with many of the previous comments - this is an attractive pub with outside tables in an 'L' shaped garden. The service is friendly and reasonably efficient, however we found the food average at best. The roast potatoes were tasteless and appeared to have been reheated, the beef wasn't great either.

The Bugle Inn is an 18th Century coaching inn located 2 miles from the Historic city of Winchester. Soon to be taken back to its original inn status with B&B rooms opening in January 2014. The Bugle inn is famous for it's locally sourced organic produce,
Unlike some other reviewers, we arrived after 8 on a busy Monday evening without a reservation and were fitted in with no fuss. Our four dishes were all very good: mussels and lamb cutlets (three tender, thick cuts served appropriately pink) were outstanding. Excellent wine by the glass. Attentive service by the girls, with some nice little touches without having to ask (e.g. water, extra plates and cutlery as we shared dishes, finger bowls). All nicely timed at a relaxed pace. Buzzy atmosphere without being noisy, pleasantly casual as against the pretentiousness of our hotel. One of the most enjoyable meals we have had in a while. Not cheap, but worth it for the quality. The Monday evening deal (£21 for two courses) made the final bill reasonable. Highly recommended.
