A visually exciting, warm, upscale dining and drinking experience, without attitude or pretension. Just delicious, top quality, beautifully presented cuisine, delicious cocktails, excellent wines by the glass or bottle - all very affordable, ten taps feat
What a hidden gem. We created our own cheese/meat board and it was AMAZING! The waitress was so helpful and helped curb our board - we went a bit crazy with so many options. No gluten free crackers but who needed them with so much cheese to choose from. The seating was fun and casual and the atmosphere was uplifting. A hidden and unassuming gem. Check it out for sure.So very happy you found us, and that you found plenty of food to enjoy! Just a note for anyone else reading: we do have 100% corn (gluten free) chips which we can substitute for bread points! We're always looking for other gluten free options for crackers and the like, feel free to let us know of any "winners"!Thank you again, we're always happy to hear how happy we've made our guests! See you next time!-dan

We found this place entirely by accident but came back again happily. It's a large open space with walls lined with book shelves, well spaced tables, and children's nook, and a really good coffee bar (yes, "bar" with stools, etc). The delicious cookies are large enough to share and the coffee is brewed strong and fresh. We didn't eat any of the sandwich type food fare, but the menu is inviting, so give it a go! I gather from postings inside the cafe that the space is used for events on weekends and, yes, beer taps behind the bar give away the transition that takes place in the evening - and there's a wine menu, too. The books are all new and current, so you're not stuck with someone's rejects if you want to pick up something to read. Thinking back, I didn't see comfy spaces to curl up for hours and the tables/chairs, while roomy and well spaced, do not invite staying for hours to read casually. But they would be great for writing a term paper or laughing with friends about what you've read or plan to read.

The veal saltimbocca was the thinnest veal I've ever seen. It was only barely thicker than the prosciutto and the sage only dusted the top. The sauce was excellent; the garlic mashed potatoes were among the best I've ever had. The vegetables were overcooked. Service left a lot to be desired. The staff reached across my wife's food to pick up a dirty plate. He also tried to take a plate while the person was still eating. We needed to ask that water glasses be refilled. We asked if the Cannoli had chocolate bits on the ends. The waitperson said, "No." We should have asked it the cannoli had chocolate in it at all, because it did.

Just got a spicy Bloody Mary and no food, since I didn't feel like having brunch. The drink was very good. I looked over the menu and saw that their house burger is $17, with $1.00 extra for cheese, and no sides except for housemade 'chips' -- that's the most expensive burger I've seen yet, at least in the Portsmouth to Portland corridor. Maybe it's worth it. They have a really nice selection of Maine craft drafts and some nice cocktails. Cozy and classy atmosphere, good service.

We had lunch one day and dinner the next with two kids and two thirsty adults and both visits were positively enjoyable with excellent service and quality food. I recommend the garden quesadillas with pulled chicken for lunch and baked haddock for dinner. The burgers and chicken tenders went down well with the kids. Their brews were refreshing and many choices available.

We had been years ago and decided to stop back in for some gifts. The owner was so helpful and even handwrite a recipe for a dark and stormy cocktail. We purchased the ingredients and just prepared it at home. It's absolutely delicious. Be sure to find some time to shop and drink at Vena's!

We stopped here for an early dinner and ended up doing Happy Hour with Chicken and Waffles, a large Salad with Chicken, Shrimp Tacos, and a Burger. Each dish was very well prepared and the price was right especially for the Happy Hour Specials. There were quite a large group for a Thursday night and we really enjoyed the food. Bryce was our waiter and he was excellent!!!

I recently stayed at the hotel and didn't have time to find a place to eat. The smoked seafood chowder was great. If you like creamy seafood chowders this is a must have. You will not be disappointed. I also had the pizza and really enjoyed it. Normally I wouldn't recommend getting pizza in Maine but this was actually very good. Although, I do wish I tried the lobster roll...will need to be next time. The service was great and I highly recommend giving this place a try.

The Bear bustled on a mid-summer weekend. Parking was curbside. After only a brief wait, we got a cozy four-person booth instead of a table or bar-side. Lighting was dim, but not at all romantic. We got good service, not great. Our table had full condiments, beer lists, drink lists, and menus. The beer list alone had 80 choices, most brewed in New England. From a wide-ranging menu, we chose haddock and burger plates. Burger was served naked, except for its blue cheese dressing â a disappointment. It was dry, not juicy â also a disappointment. Haddock came with coleslaw as a dressing, not as a side dish â a surprise. Our sides of fries were fast-fried slabs of potato â also a surprise. By contrast, our drinks were just what weâd hoped theyâd be. We enjoyed the Bearâs unique, laid-back, hip atmosphere, its whimsical décor, and its amazingly varied drinking options. We'll be back again someday.
