A jolly good English country pub with a range of well chosen largely local beer and a splendid menu starting from traditional pub food and spreading interestingly much wider than that. Necessary to book as it's smallish and very sought after. Lowish beams depending on your height.

A traditional English Inn boasting 20 en-suite bedrooms recently beautifully fully refurbished in 2017. The hotel is located in the quaint and picturesque town of Thaxted in north Essex opposite the wonderful church with views of the famous John Webb Wind
We love a little trip out on a Thursday lunchtime and Thaxted isn't too far and such a beautiful little village We have visited the Swan on several occasions, but recently been quite disappointed with the standards.I have to say the food is delicious, no problem there, but the lack lustre way the place is managed and the bar "service " is slow and just not very engaging. The most recent 2 visits there has been hardly a customer in the place and yet there is no sense of care or attention. I have had to ask for menus, which have been sticky, no condiments or cutlery in the pots on the table and a barman who will take 5 minutes to polish one glass for wine and seemingly can only deal with one drink at a time.....I do wonder why the glasses are not all ready and polished for the lunchtime trade? Today my husband was met with. "Oh we have a table of 25 coming in shortly- I don't know if we are doing any other food?" What would they do if 5 tables of 5 walked in? They were doing food and it was good, not spectacular but for the price good. Our starter plate were not cleared until our mains were delivered to the table and at no point were we asked if anything was ok, not even when I went to pay the bill.I felt so sorry for the lovely couple just inside the door, his food came and for some reason hers took an absolute age- I really hope they didn't make them pay! The table of 25 arrived whilst we were eating our main course and they had to endure a long wait at the bar as they tried to get drinks. The 'manager'? George?Who knows? Had popped out to the bank? Leaving a rather lack lustre barman and an older lady running things. Even when he did return, he made no apologies to anyone waiting, even when a customer mentioned the wait. This was all between 12:30 and 13:30 Having worked in the service industry ourselves both my husband and I know the pressures and limitations of staff and resources but even in the worst situation, which this as not, a kind word or acknowledgement of people spending money in your establishment is not a difficult to achieve.Oh and by the way, you might want to get your cleaners to dust the fruit machines as first impressions count. It's the attention to detail that counts.

Enviable reputation in a great location with all the food being prepared and cooked on the premises by our award winning chef Philip Todd. Home-made dishes cooked to order and nothing is too much trouble.
One of our favourite places for lunch. This month our confidence was again rewarded with a warm welcome, good food and good service.

A friendly pub with a good range of ales, we had a very good traditional pub meal here, from a menu offering a wide range of options and prices. I didn't try the T Bone steak, but my Lamb curry didn't disappoint.

The Butchers Arms is a 500 Year old country pub set in the lovely countryside of Gt Dunmow. Only 15 mins from Chelmsford and 10 mins to Stansted Airport. Perfect for Lunch 12-3pm or Dinner 6-9pm and Sunday Roast is served 12-7pm every week. We are a prime
Why is it when we find a great pub it's a few miles away from home? I would love a local like this as we would spend a lot of time there. The landlord and landlady are very welcoming and friendly. After our meal we had coffee in the bar and they and the locals chatted to us. This place is half an hour away from us but we will make the effort to go when we can. Apparently the Sunday roast is very good so that will be our next visit. Our first visit was the Saturday before mothers day for lunch. We really enjoyed the food which was well cooked and plentiful. One course was enough really but the puddings are to nice to miss. I had the steak and kidney pud with lemon sorbet to finish and hubby had the steak with fruit crumble to finish. All were excellent and very filling. Di, the waitress, deserves a mention as she was helpful, enthusiastic and enhanced the pubs atmosphere

Not been here for a while but needed an evening meal recently, spoke to Becca and called in one Wednesday. Shared a baked Camembert. Both the Sea Bass and the Salmon were excellent. No room for a dessert but they looked tempting. Note to self: must go there more often!

We are a cozy country pub. We serve good home cooked food. We have a cosy, warm bar with real ale and an open fire, a lovely dining room and a large beer garden. We also have B&B rooms available.
Beautiful old pub, full of charm and character. Laid back service, which can make for a relaxed and unhurried visit. Staff are friendly. Food was delicious. Pan fried salmon was perfectly done, goats cheese salad was refreshing and light, and the sausage and mash were full of flavour. I can imagine this pub to be unbelievably cozy in the winter. Definitely a regular now! Great to hear weâre now a âregularâ. Look forward to seeing you again. Thanks for your comments.
