Today was the coldest (-17°C) it has been this year, at least for now, so I was really craving for a bowl of ramen to warm my guts. This humble diner is so inconspicuous that it's easy to miss. Moreover, if not for the flags with the words "ãã¼ãã" on them near the entrance, you would have mistaken this as a café or a restaurant that offers Western cuisine. The presentation is simple and unpretentious. The soup is hearty, not heavy. And unlike most, if not all the ramen restaurants I've been to so far in Hokkaido, this place actually uses thin yellow egg noodles (the kind you would find in Hakata ramen chains like Ippudo or Ichiran). For my Singaporean readers, think of it as "mee kia". So yeah, slurping down a piping hot bowl of "mee kia" miso soup not only warmed my insides, it also faintly reminded me of home. I'm glad I took a chance and stepped in despite being the only customer...

Hokkaido, Japan Food Guide: 10 Sushi food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Tomakomai
The last time I was here, I walked out of the restaurant with sweat beats dropping from my head. I had visited the restaurant on the recommendation of a colleague. This place is famous for their åå·é¢¨å³ã©ã¼ã¡ã³ and the noodles didn't disappoint. If there was any regret, it was that I could have been more conservative and opted for a lower spiciness level (from 1-5). I went for a 4, because level 3 is the recommended "normal" level of spiciness for Japanese. Thinking that I could probably handle spiciness better than the average Japanese, I went for level 4. Boy did the broth whip me good, but I had a great time perspiring in the freezing cold. This time round, I went with the èèã©ã¼ã¡ã³ instead, because I wanted to savour the broth for its flavour... Turned out to be the best choice!!! Not only is the broth thick and fragrant, the tiny blobs of pork fat really enhanced the flavour of the soup. The best part, this place is just a stone's throw from my apartment!!! Looks like I'm gonna be a regular customer in future!!!
If you're tired of having ramen all the time to rid yourself of the cold, why not try some soup curry? Asian Bar Ramen has a distinctive Valine service feel and ambience, with Buddha heads a common feature in this restaurant. Choose the spiciness level from 1 to 10...and if you're brave enough, there's an "infinity" option...just make sure you have the guts to stomach the spice! Enjoy!!!
