The second-largest island in Mediterranean after Sicily, Sardinia serves up a lovely blend of sea, sand and history. Thousands of nuraghe (stone buildings) dot the landscape, proof that people have been enjoying the lovely climate here for millennia. From posh Costa Smerelda in the north to medieval Alghero in the northwest to the lively capital of Cagliari in the south, and with many picturesque towns and unspoiled sandy beaches in between, Sardinia’s got a little something for everyone.

The SOUND GARDEN Pinuccio Sciola’s open air Museum, the “Sound Garden” is an open area filled with megalithic rocks and citrus fragrances… a timeless space which stimulates, magnifies, contemplates, all senses. In this “enchanted” garden, the guides take the visitors into a universe of new sounds created by the different types of stones and the way the artist worked on them. A way to savour and appreciate art, a cultural space in which, through creativity and respect, one can even take part in “playing the stones” and experience the ancestral sound left enclosed in the matter for thousands of years.

The art gallery is sited inside the old Canopoleno Jesuit College built in 17th Century. It is part of the old town, and close to the most important historical buildings of the city. The adjacent Jesuit church of Gesù e Maria, now dedicated to Santa Caterina, was an integral part of the structure. The recent establishment of the Art Gallery was the result of the need to find a home for the rich artistic heritage donated from private citizens. Previously, with the exception of a small selection which were exhibited in the G.A. Sanna National Archeological Museum, these were kept in store rooms. The exhibition covers three floors of the building and consists in more than 400 works of art, mainly paintings. It is divided into different themes (religious subjects, mythology, history, portraits, landscapes, still lifes, genre scenes etc.). These are organised chronologically and show the work of different Italian and European artists and schools from the medieve to the 21th Century. There is also an important collection of the works of Sardinian artists from the early 20th century and a rich collection of graphic works.

The Nivola Museum in Orani is an institution devoted to the work of Costantino Nivola within the larger context of contemporary art, landscape and living traditions. The museum was established in 1994, a few years after the death of Nivola (Orani, 1911- East Hampton,1988) and has been expanding ever since. The permanent collection holds more than two hundreds sculptures, paintings and drawings by Nivola, who played a unique role in 20th century modernism as an artist who worked closely with architects. Aside from exhibiting Nivola’s work, the museum produces temporary exhibitions on a regular basis. These center mainly on the relationship between art, architecture, and landscape, with a special focus on artists and movements that were close to Nivola, whose friends included Le Corbusier, Jackson Pollock, Saul Steinberg, Willem de Kooning, Alexander Calder and many other protagonists of mid-20th century art.
