Getting its name from the medieval Duchy of Limburg (now split among Holland, Belgium and Germany and the birthplace of the infamously pungent Limburger cheese), Limburg is the Netherlands’ southernmost region. Many of the area’s best attractions are concentrated in the capital of Maastricht, but other sights include the 12th-century Valkenburg castle ruins, the 17th-century Eijsden castle, the 20th-century Glaspaleis (built next to a medieval church at Heerlen), and De Meinweg National Park.

Museum de Schat van Simpelveld is located in a monumental monastery. It houses a grand art collection consisting of exquisite 19th and 20th century embroidery, beautiful paintings, golden chalices, wax statues and medieval sculptures. It also offers you a view of early 20th century monastic life and tells you the story of the blessed Clara Fey, founder of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus.

This little park in Venray was a complete surprise to me when our friends brought us here. It is a park with well described walks past some really unique modern art installations. The short walk was pleasant, and the whole family enjoyed the art. The temporary installation inside the building "Weil ich ein madchen bin" was fascinating and beautiful. We sat down for a delicious cup of coffee, and since we were in Limburg we enjoyed a slice of vlaai too. Overall I highly recommend spending a few hours in this delightful park.

Art museum featuring archaeological finds from the province of Limburg, sculptures from the Maasland (1300-1550A.D.) and paintings of south Holland (1500-1750A.D.)
I was particularly taken by the work of Kahlil Joseph’s work ‘BLK NWS’. A moving look at the history and state of affairs for African Americans. It is a moving piece. I hope that everyone takes the time to watch this film. Upstairs the work of Mark Manders was interesting and thought provoking. The old masters was also worth visiting. Especially interesting to me the still life hunting scenes. Had lunch in the museum restaurant Ipanema. A good way to round up an interesting visit.

Marres is a House for Contemporary Culture located in the heart of the old town of Maastricht. Marres develops with artists, musicians, designers, chefs and perfumers, a new vocabulary for the senses. In addition to bringing a lively program of exhibitions, presentations and performances, Marres also features a beautiful garden and a wonderful restaurant.
