The fire observing tower was constructed in 1826. Today it is one of the Kostroma museum-reserve buildings, where you can found the tourist infos center and the tour desk.

Astashovo-house is the only museum hotel in Russia. It was built in 1897 in a sylvan area of Kostroma province. A dacha insanely decorated in Russian style meant to celebrate the prosperity of its self-made owner. Sadly, some 100 years later the manor was deserted and overgrown. We restored it to the former glory so that our guests can experience the authentic lifestyle of pre-revolutionary rural Russia. Astashovo is located among Taiga forests and abandoned villages. It is meditational, peaceful and quiet, yet its surroundings provide endless opportunities for outdoor activities and adventures.
I agree with the review that calls this a fairy tale in the middle of nowhere. You have to go off roading for 30kms in dirt roads thru abandoned villages to get here but the reward is amazing. The owners have beautifully restored this wood palace into a hotel but also a living museum. The staff make gourmet hand made meals such as berry juice and other treats like homestyle cooking. The rooms are very modern and comfortable, most have brand new ensuite bathrooms. No Tvs but excellent wifi for this remote location. Aside from staying and exploring the home there are recreational activities. There is a 7km walking trail loop thru the countryside, or they can arrange other types of activities. There is a second run down wood palace also worth exploring and can not be reached by road except by 4WD vehicles. I have youtube videos of both on my channel [departures1]. Definitely worth the trek to get here and you would need to stay two nights to really explore the surrounding areas. They also provide boots for hiking in the mud.
