Top 10 Archaeology Tours in Tangier, Tangier-Tetouan Region

December 22, 2021 Natalie Tallman

Located on the Strait of Gibraltar where Africa meets Europe, Tangier has long held strategic importance. Ruled through the centuries by waves of conquerors including Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs and Portuguese, the city is more than two and a half millennia old, making it one of North Africa's most ancient. The medina, kasbah, bazaars and souks are among the country's most vibrant, and the beaches are excellent. In the last century, Tangier became a hot spot for the international jet set.

We were only in Tangier for 2 nights and one full day so we wanted to maximize our one full day. Wow did Anwar deliver! At 8:30 in the morning he had a very professional driver ready with a nice clean black Mercedes. We started with the drive along the coast to Asilah, an ancient port city about 50 km south along the coast. It became clear early in the day that although Anwar was young he had a passion for being a tour guide. Asilah old town was amazing (note, there's a currency exchange storefront along the street as you exit out the back of the old town that was professional and the exchange was thr same as the bank. I told Anwar to remember this place because I was going to mention it in my review. Morocco is fairly old school and very few places or vendors or restaurants accept credit cards). From asilah we headed north to the Cave of Hercules, Camel rides, and the place where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic ocean. As a bonus that he hadn't even quoted us and didn't charge us for the driver took us north of Tangier to a nice overlook of the bay and city. From there the tour moved into the city. We had lunch at a wonderful restaurant in Old Medina. The lunch was a feast fit for a king. The wonderful and delicious food just kept on coming (the bill for the two of us for lunch was 35 Euros, which was a good value compared to other quality meals we had eaten, make sure you are starving for lunch or you let Anwar know you are not looking for that much food). After lunch she took us to a number of shops where he obviously knew the proprietor. If you are familiar with tours this is fairly common for tours, but I was impressed with the fact that none of the shops that Anwar took us to was overly aggressive in trying to sell us something. If you are looking for something in particular ask Anwar and I'm sure he can find it for you. I think we were back to our hotel about 3 p.m. so he gave us a full day. As a seasoned traveler, I would definitely recommend using Anwar and supporting a young man who is trying to establish his career as a tour guide Tanger.

On a recent trip to Morocco we were given an opportunity to have an extra day of leisure in Casablanca. With some research we soon realized that we would be seeing all of the top attractions in Casablanca during our tour so we started to research the day trips available from Casablanca. This day trip to Tangier drew our attention because it was one place not included in our tour but we were unsure of the tour because it had no reviews. We decided to take a chance and we were very pleased. In fact, this day trip was one of the highlights of our trip. We were met at the Tangier train station by our local guide Bilal who was excellent. Bilal and the driver took the three of us on a fantastic tour of Tangier which included the Tangier Medina, the Hercules Cave and much more. We had a delicious lunch in a small family run local restaurant which was not included but was reasonably priced. We even had a chance to take a ride along the beach on some dromedaries (one humped camels). The high speed (298 km/hr) train ride from Casablanca to Tangier which is include is two hours each way allowing a chance to see the landscaping along the coast of Morocco. Just make sure you receive your train tickets prior to your tour. All in all an excellent day. I would recommend.

Ali Tangier Tours was worth every penny! Ali was very responsive and easy to work with as we started to plan our trip months before. He gave us phenomenal suggestions and we were able to visit many places through out Morocco. When we arrived to Morocco we were met by Abdul, who was our tour guide through out our 10 day adventure. Abdul was an incredible guide, very knowledgeable on the history of Morocco, and genuinely a great person. Sometimes it can be a bit worrisome when traveling to a different country, but Abdul was honest, very trustworthy, and caring, which made the whole entire experience comfortable and amazing to say the least. We started in Tangier, where we were brought to quality spots to eat and shop. Abdul took us around the Médina and gave us a history tour of Tangier. From here he took us to Chefchaouen. On the way Abdul gave us options to stop and see other cities, which we did not think to see, as well as, quality places to eat. Only a local Moroccan would know this information. After our stay in Chefchaouen, we planned to go to Fes. Abdul, once again had many suggestions that were great on our way to Fes. We stopped to see Volubilis, and made a stop in Meknès to see the doors. Here we were brought to my favorite store in Morocco. With out Abdul’s suggestion I would have never gone here! With plenty of time to spare we were able to get to Fes. In Fes, Abdul guided us to the tanneries and through the Médina. He brought us to the top quality spots, which really made a difference. From here we left for Merzouga, to see the Sahara Desert. Once again, Abdul was gracious and knowledgeable through out this 9 hour journey. We made a stop for breakfast, and another stop in Rissani, where we got to a beautiful Rug shop. Once again another great suggestion, these gentlemen were top notch, quality guys. We were met with local cuisine and Moroccan tea. Abdul, helped us set up our quads and Camel ride experience in the Desert. Once again he exceeded our expectations. From here we spent the remaining time in Marrakech. The information that Abdul shared with us prepared us for Marrakech. Everything he said and did was truthful and genuine and I can’t say enough about him as a guide. Ali Tangier Tours really went above and beyond. Ali checked in on us multiple times to make sure our experience was going well. Our experience was the complete Moroccan experience in and out and with out Abdul we would not have experienced half of what we got to. We are truly happy that we chose Ali Tangier tours and we can not say enough positive things. Thank you to Ali and Abdul for such an amazing time!

With three extra days in Namibia, I decided to include a quick trip to Etosha. I struggled to find a company that was still operational, and met my needs. Then I chatted with Megan, representative with Across Africa. I quickly knew she was actually interested in helping. Her sincerity, honesty, humanity and dedication were recognized immediately, and I knew that I didn’t need to search further. She set up my trip with no hidden BS, made an effort to meet all my needs, and did all of it promptly, professionally, and graciously. My trip turned out perfectly down to the last detail. I credit Megan and my guide Steve for making my quick visit to Etosha unforgettable. Because of them I will use Across Africa in the future and suggest to others that they do the same!
