Cumbria's valleys and fells (as the low mountains are known) are home to idyllic villages, high moorlands and picturesque lakes. Literary buffs will enjoy Wordsworth's Dove Cottage (go in March to see daffodils), and if you've got kids in tow, visit The World of Beatrix Potter. Or just enjoy a leisurely drive through beautiful scenery.

We were staying for a week in a cottage just outside Windermere and one day decided to visit Kendal. My wife loves buying vintage items for our house and garden and said that we must visit the Antiques Emporian. It proved to be a bit of an Aladdin's cave of items for sale and she bought a couple of items on our first visit. There was however something that she wasn't sure about buying but after a couple of days of thinking about it back we went to get it. Luckily it was still in stock. I tried my best to negotiate a price reduction just as they do on 'Bargain Hunt' and other antiques programmes on the TV but there is a house rule that there is no negotiation on items priced at £20 or below, and as it was priced at £18, that was the price that had to be paid. My wife was happy with this however as from a look on sites such as ebay the item she bought usually sells for around £25. Well worth visiting if you have the time to spare.

Quality paintings in a fantastic location. A warm and friendly welcome awaits you in Hawkshead.
We visited the gallery whilst staying near Hawkshead. The lady running the gallery was very polite, friendly and knowledgeable, she took time to show us around and talk about the different artists whose work is displayed and was happy to answer any questions. We ended up purchasing a painting of a Stag by Rob Hefferan and then a landscape by John Russell from the Coniston shop. We are very happy with our purchases and were very grateful to Maggie for her help during our visit.

So as far as markets go this is a treat to behold. This market in Keswick is in my opinion what a market should be. Stalls range from handmade wool scarfs, silver jewellery and good quality clothes to special hand made items for the garden (Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz) and Keswick made Gins, Cheeses and Pies. Great market!

A REAL antique shop. We visited the other antique emporium (uninspiring ) then found this - a real gem. The building itself is ancient and worth seeing. The owner was informative and helpful without being pushy. Whilst there was a huge amount of stock, such that you had to take some care moving around, it was very enjoyable and there were some real treasures to be found. We came away with a lovely piece of Delft (1897) and another piece of porcelain. We will definitely return.
This was the original home of the founder of covered livestock auctions in Britain - Robinson Mitchell. Ground-floor of this listed building is laid out as a crafts; collectables & antique market/centre. Enjoy walking around this beautiful nineteenth century gothic-style building with many original features & see what crafters have made or antique dealers are selling.Mon-Sat 10.30 am -4.30 pm
